The book's intrigue is in the scenes more than the straight philosophy. La Berge maintains a gentle and humorous curiosity in the lives of her former colleagues and her past self. They operated in this system because this was the system, and they tried to make it their own, but they more or less just bent toward something that formed a shape with no image, no purpose.

Kelsey Mitchell • @Kelz_Ho... 10/1/25 to the fever fans and fans of KelzHoop: me letting you all know about my health is just me showing love and respect to those who showed it to me i suffered from something called Rhabdomyolysis last night. my muscles stopped producing and reached it's maximum capacity. i went into a sense of numbness/ paralyzing feeling with no movement from my lower extremities for up to 5 to 7 seconds. because my muscles stopped producing positive blood to my bloodstream, my body locked up from a physical standpoint and from there fatigue and cramping settled in. it sucked. i panicked because i began to think the worse when i felt like i couldn't move my legs. it was an out of body experience for me and i thank God for covering me at a time like that. so today on Oct. 1, i am walking and moving at a slow pace, but i will be fine very soon. i want to thank the Fever medical team, Vegas medical team, and the staff at the local hospital for keeping me safe. in other words, i played literally til my wheels fell off, Imao THANK you for the prayers, love, respect, and support throughout all of this. if you rode with me through this journey, then i love you!
We do know there are ample alternatives to Substack run by more ethical people that provide authors more control over their own audience and work. The platform this newsletter runs on, Ghost, is open source, easy to use, and its founders don't openly coddle fascist assholes (it also has tools making it easy to migrate from Substack). Beehiv, Buttondown, and Wordpress are additional options.

It was like I put my hands out in front of my mind and stopped it from wondering what exactly he was making fun of me for. Women, perennially on the outside, still aren't the right kind of outsider to be celebrated for going against the grain.

I would have thought it'd have been more difficult than it was. To be honest, I had to stop. A couple years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. Not one that a doctor or a Google search ever told me had any adverse relationship to drinking. But I was getting intensely sick. Three beers over the course of four hours would result in the symptomatic equivalent of alcohol poisoning. I tried to limit my drinking with hard caps, but that inevitably failed every few weeks, and I was torturing myself. I figured I had to legitimately quit.
Bonfires are already such fuzzy visual memories. So, when you're drunk, they become swirls that sort of just lock into your memory and erase the immediate before and after. I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. I got drunk for the first time when I was 14, and for most of high school I either chased or succumbed to the possibilities of parties and girls and peer pressure and just saying yes to the next thing because going with the flow was just inertia within this context and stopping myself from drinking would have been a much more conscious, effortful decision.

And that's where you start to get lightheaded as a parent. In this little guy's short life, it was unsafe for him to receive anesthesia just a month and a half ago. And now, it is supposedly safe. But it feels wrong to make this kid who has only ever been a terrible sleeper go to sleep this way. He never gave anyone permission to do this. He doesn't understand. He won't know where he is when he wakes up. And none of this even touches on the fact that they are going to cut him open.
1b. I do like that I still love and care about the Sixers as much as I ever did. Or at least, I have the capability to - maybe some games I'm able to brush off a little easier than I used to be, which doesn't feel like the worst thing in the long run anyway. But I'm still tuning in every night, I'm still watching every Summer League game till the end and caring about preseason wins and losses. And during (and after that Game Seven against the Celtics, it was the most emotional I've ever been over a sporting event. I'm not as obsessive over the minutiae as l was when the Sixers were able to take up a larger percentage of my time and mental capacity, which I think is ultimately OK. But I'd be pretty bummed if I wasn't able to feel the team the way I used to, for better and worse. I hope I'm able to maintain that sicko level for decades to come still.

None of the chapters can contain themselves with the drummers they are meant to cover. They all represent a movement and provide a great deal of context as to why that particular drummer could come along and have such a drastic impact on the way music would sound going forward.
