The left side is the normal photo, the right side is black-and-white, using the Floyd-Steinberg dithering algorithm; by strategically placing black dots on a white background, my likeness is preserved, and the filesize is only 11.5% of the original. It's also quite a cool-looking effect!

A bunch of circles are applied randomly to a canvas. Some circles are filled, others are just the outline. The circles are added quickly, but the color of each new circle changes slowly, so that the whole piece slowly rotates through the color wheel. As a result, the balance of colors from previously-drawn circles is always shifting.

Why not use an animated GIF? You might be wondering why we went through all of this trouble. Couldn’t we accomplish the same goal with an <img src="/images/gold-trophy.gif" />? The main benefit of this approach over an animated GIF is that we have a lot more control. We can change how fast the animation runs by tweaking animation-duration. We can also start/stop the animation at precisely the right time using animation-play-state. GIFs don’t have a pause button, and they tend to be a bit inconsistent in terms of their timing. Additionally, this approach tends to be more performant, especially when optimized. In the real <GoldTrophy> component, I’ve plucked the flickering blue flames into their own separate spritesheet and layered them behind a static gold trophy. Both images use the modern .avif image format. The combined images are under 30kb, while a .gif would be over 100kb (and limited to just 256 colors!). To be fair, there are plenty of circumstances where an animated GIF will work just fine. But once you start experimenting with sprites, I think you’ll agree that it opens up a lot of interesting new doors. I share a more advanced use case a bit later on.
