"Hiring algorithms change lives and shape labor markets, but we lack empirical research into their impact on applicants. Most prior work centers the perspective of employers, measuring whether an algorithm reflects employer preferences, reduces employer costs, and complies with employer-level employment discrimination law. While important, the employer-centric perspective neglects the structural shifts to the labor market caused by algorithms. Algorithms not only influence hiring at each employer but also link outcomes across employers due to shared dependence on the same vendor(s). Since an applicant’s employment status depends on the cumulative decisions of many employers, algorithmic monoculture may precipitate systemic exclusion from the labor market for some applicants. We discuss the relationship between our work and policy (§4.1) as well as key limitations relevant to the interpretation of this work and the prospect of future work (§4.2)."
AI hiring tools used by large employers are repeatedly screening out some of the same job applicants, with researchers finding that Black and Asian candidates are disproportionately affected. A Stanford-led study of 4mn job applications across 156 employers who used the Pymetrics hiring platform, which assesses people using a series of online games, found evidence of “systemic rejection” linked to the algorithms it used.

What all of this amounts to isn’t just one problem but a stack of them, each feeding the next. Most people now encounter the world through algorithmic feeds built to warp reality, on platforms with every commercial incentive to keep users scrolling and very little incentive to distinguish genuine interest from astroturfed imitations. Into those feeds flows an unprecedented amount of undisclosed advertising engineered to resemble the improvised enthusiasm of human strangers. The platforms reward it with reach; traditional media picks it up and validates it. Meanwhile, as trust in journalism collapses and most of the actual reporting disappears behind paywalls, readers head straight for the comment sections, which seem more like the voice of the people than anything written by a reporter — except many of those commenters may not be people at all.
