Conclusion and Interpretation Regardless of how generalizable the results are, at least one major U.S. jurisdiction, the State of Indiana, may wish to consider an apparent detrimental effect of its recently enacted DST policy.2 The nature of these SAT-impinging effects may be understood as genuine cognitive damage at least as much as related to scholastic performance because the SAT exam is more of an aptitude than an achievement test. Starkly expressed, DST appears to cause brain damage. In this less-than-truly experimental design, of course, causality cannot be definitely inferred. The reverse causation remains possible, that is, that the cognitively deficient or poor SAT populations will be more likely to embrace DST (a finding that would be rather notable in its own right). Yet, the intuitively more likely causal sequence has been represented here as the default. The third possibility, that DST and SAT are mutual effects of a third variable, seems exceedingly remote.
