4th of July 250 I was 8 when the Bicentennial. Happened. As a kid I was dazzled by the sparkly Stars and Stripes, so many images of Abe and George and America the Beautiful playing non stop. I don’t remember the celebration of the actual day very much. The whole year was really a celebration. Even in November on my 9th birthday there’s a picture of me wearing my Liberty Bell 1776 T-shirt (with my arm around the 1975 Playboy Playmate of the year, Marilyn Langue… but that’s a different story). There were so many fireworks that year none of them stand out. Now, 50 years later, the 250th feels more like an obligation we’ve been dreading for 6 months, like knowing you are going to have to celebrate the birthday of your aged great aunt who always found mean ways to embarrass you even before she had dementia and thinks you are the black sheep daughter she never really loved. But I still have hope, and feel like it is important to hold onto that hope. I still stand for the National Anthem. I still say The Pledge of Allegiance (though I leave out the stupid parts added by Asshole Congress in the 1950s). I do so because I believe in the idea that American CAN be better than the rocky and cruel foundation we were born on. I believe for too long we have allowed certain folks with out the best interests of the country at heart to use our symbols, our hopes, our belief in democracy to bend the future away from justice and into graft to like their own pockets. I think we need to stand up and take back these symbols and make them mean what we WANT them to mean again. So, this morning, among the many flags I attached to my car showing my pride and support, I also attached an American flag, and this week I’ll be painting some American flags as a way to bring that symbol back into the fold. I wish you all a Happy 4th filled with hope in a future that again bends toward justice for all.

Crack in the Wall by JTony There’s a crack in the wall In the quake of 2015, the room tilted 757 miles And the crack appeared Letting in cold air Mildew, red and dark And bits of refuse and detritus I got tired of cleaning shoving the trash back through the crack Over the years I’ve sealed it The seal wouldn’t hold at first Layer after layer of spackle and plaster And it finally closed up With a wide marked scar Now, only in dreams does it open A tiny gap letting cold, black light into the room Glowing up spots where Cleansing was less than complete Where I hadn’t noticed stains and smudges Left over from when the crack was wide I wake to check the crack Fearful it has opened It is still there Behind the thick seal One day I will paint over it In hopes of forgetting it was ever there And the room existed anywhere else But here 06/03/2026
