Once again something I think I would have taken to more firmly if I had more interest in the subject matter. I do not necessarily think the aspects of this story that were directly about corporate hierarchies and bank paperwork and such were, like, super high concept or anything, but it was just not anything that I could find it in myself to care about. Tragic, because the dynamic set up over two women competing over those things so passionately that they start trying to ruin each other's lives was really compelling. As far as complete stories go this might have been a contender for my favorite if it wasn't for the above gripes. Definitely something to root out real toxic yuri enjoyers from the fake fans.
Unfortunately this series did not leave very much of an impression on me despite being fairly cute. I like the idea of a story wherein a love for producing and performing music is a major undercurrent being told in a medium with no auditory component, but as someone with very little knowledge of producing or performing music, I largely think most of those parts were lost on me. It is also fairly short so maybe if it had more time to breathe it would have settled into a pace I could personally vibe with more strongly? I did get a lot of value out of reading the main character as a trans woman by comparing her story with my own experiences and those of other trans women I've known so that is always worthwhile! I found the style and characterization quite charming as well.

Hell yes. Fuck yes. That's what I'm talking about baby. Murciélago is an interesting contrast with Liberta where it's even more about girls who are fucked up but to an extent that I think would've put me off entirely if I'd read it during any era of my life before this one. Nearly all the characters that are given any degree of protagonism are straight up criminals AND bad people. This is okay with me because 99% of them are women. It's genuinely making it hard for me to look at it with a critical eye because it's so cool to me that a story like this can exist with such a breadth of women who are awful in so many different ways. The sexualization and sexual violence don't even phase me because it's all done by women to women and is STILL markedly less egregious in my book than the technically less-explicit misogyny present in a lot of more popular media. It's got all the appeal of a lot of shounen action-adventure manga but it's all women. It's frequently like actually funny, the characters are likeable not just despite their flaws but frequently because of them, the art is consistently very striking and well-made. It's overall become one of my favorite things ever. It IS worth acknowledging that some of the imagery especially the gory scenes probably go past what a lot of people are willing to stomach but that's really the only negative it has in my eyes. Hop on peak.
I think Liberta would've hit my entire system (in every definition of the word) like an electric shock if I'd read it in middle school and that's mostly a praise. It struck me as kind of primarily having gag manga energy and pacing that made the more serious worldbuilding feel like it didn't have time to breathe really, which is too bad because lesbian vampires and demon princesses shapeshifting their blood into weapons is objectively really really really good. Ultimately it was still a lot of fun, the art style is super appealing to me and I like when girls are fucked up and don't really care about anything except each other. It isn't very long which is too bad but does help make it even more worth reading.
