I'd suggest it's emotional self protection. Pretend it's a joke and see if everyone will laugh. Same as when Trump gets caught doing something stupid and he tries to pivot to "joking" (or ironic or figurative not literal). Elon is extremely emotionally insecure. He needs/thrives on validation.
