Text: "Over 18,160 people in Arkansas lost coverage in only five months before courts halted the policy. Many were our clients. Adrian McGonigal had chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, for which he received treatment. At the time he held a job working 30 to 40 hours a week at a poultry plant, which paid more than any other job he'd had before and should have satisfied the requirement. But the state's system for automatically identifying working people was faulty, and Mr. McGonigal struggled to navigate the complex monthly reporting system on his own. Unable to report his work, he lost Medicaid, couldn't afford his C.O.P.D. medications, wound up in the hospital emergency room several times, lost his job and never fully recovered. For the next several years he struggled in various minimum-wage jobs, earning much less than he had at the poultry plant. Sadly, he died in November."

A comparison of the cost of living between 1989 and 2025 shows the prices of a dozen eggs, a gallon of gas, average rent, and the SSI asset limit in both years. Prices have significantly increased for eggs (from 96 cents to $4.95), gas ($1 to $3.15), and rent ($447 to $1,650). However, the SSI asset limit has remained unchanged at $2,000.

For many older Americans, post-acute care is not a matter of weeks or months. They have ongoing chronic conditions, Alzheimer's disease, most common example, and that require daily hands-on assistance as well as health care and other services. Only Medicaid covers these services on an ongoing basis, and Medicaid is flexible enough to allow needed services to be provided either in a nursing facility or at home.”

Tell Congress: No cuts to Medicaid!
Text: The Peter Harbage Fellowship offers exceptional MPH and MPP candidates a prestigious way to start their career. It provides a competitive salary with benefits and a chance to work directly with the most talented health policy leaders in California. Get high-profile experience, build a leadership network, and get paid doing it. The eighth year Peter Harbage fellow will be based in Oakland, where they will receive mentoring from Marissa Tirona, President of Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees. Throughout the fellowship, awardees get the chance to engage with other top leaders in the California health policy and philanthropy fields - including state agency directors, movement leaders, and other respected health policy experts. Only MPH and MPP candidates preparing to graduate from California institutions and University of Michigan are invited to apply. One fellowship is awarded each year. The due date is February 28, 2025.
