Keith Henry @k17.dev · Feb 3 We bought an old vicarage, and as well as being full of junk it has the largest 80s fireplace I've ever seen. Above it runs a joist, with a naff plaster wood effect. So, is the joist holding the ceiling up, or is the fireplace?

Trick question! The answer is neither! The fireplace is lightweight thermal bricks but comes apart like Jenga anyway, and the big structural looking 'joist' is actually 3× smaller ones just resting on the brick. Everything wobbles, nothing is load bearing.
