“Well, let’s get started.” Nori turned to the table where the tools for laying the wards were already assembled: chalk, a few vials of atomized elements to represent their realm, and a switchblade the length of her forearm for blood letting. The length was more out of ritual and history than necessity; unauthorized biological entities slipping through a ward were a thing of the distant past, before calculations and applied science had made tests so much safer and predictable. Still, holding a knife that could disembowel a hungry snow leopard was always reassuring. Nori added, “What’s the worst that could happen?”

I made it back to the path, where I sank to my knees, willing the edges of buzzing darkness to go the fuck away. That… went about as well as you’d expect.
