you'll note we don't care enough about consumer privacy to pass a meaningful internet-era privacy law that applies to every company that does business in the U.S., but when China pops up in the conversation suddenly these folks all breathlessly care about what happens to consumer data
I was going to say: I've seen plenty of Americans say they'd prefer the less expensive, less enormous Chinese or Japanese or even European cars. And it would be better for their roads and safety as well. The visibility is atrocious, can't see children in front of them.

Not just price competition, but also technology. US car manufactures only want to make expensive trucks because they can cut corners and make a ton of profit. That plan only works if trucks are the only thing on the lot -- not smaller sedans and coups. Doubly so, if we are in an oil crisis.
So they don't think China can see our airforce basses with Satellites and they weren't mad when Republicans took Russians on tours and let them take photos inside our Capitol building...cool
Also safety and design competition, because China understands people want more than just "fuck-off giant SUV with shit mileage that mulches pedestrians."
You already can't register or insure these cars in the US so this is basically just "man Detroit is cooked if Americans find out Chinese cars don't actually suck".
