I honestly am not even sure how you do that; wouldn't you make a rudimentary effort to confirm you heard things correctly?
Feels important to note that she’s 82 years old and no doubt has imperfect hearing so doing this seems even more insane with that context.
I was listening to it live. I don’t think there were any editors involved. There was a three-way phone conversation with the office Studio and Nina Totenberg was live on the phone. She just blurted it out. There was no lead up to it nor any chance for any editor to review it.
At this point, taking NPR seriously as a news source is like looking at Bari Weiss's CBS and thinking of Walter Cronkite.
I can't trust NPR enough at this point to believe anything until we see him NOT retire by the midterms. I hate it, but that's where I'm at.
Maybe the problem is she has been doing this for 50 years.

Totenberg is careful to such an extent that I clinch. I truly wonder if there was an embargo on the announcement & someone blinked.
We are trusting that Alito didn't betray her with a final embarrassment before what will be his upcoming announcement? As compromised as @ninatotenberg.bsky.social is, and as far as @npr.org has fallen in their journalistic standards, this smells like something different than "oops".
