I honestly am not even sure how you do that; wouldn't you make a rudimentary effort to confirm you heard things correctly?
Vagabending · 21d
Feels important to note that she’s 82 years old and no doubt has imperfect hearing so doing this seems even more insane with that context.

I was listening to it live. I don’t think there were any editors involved. There was a three-way phone conversation with the office Studio and Nina Totenberg was live on the phone. She just blurted it out. There was no lead up to it nor any chance for any editor to review it.

At this point, taking NPR seriously as a news source is like looking at Bari Weiss's CBS and thinking of Walter Cronkite.
Sean Pace · 22d
I can't trust NPR enough at this point to believe anything until we see him NOT retire by the midterms. I hate it, but that's where I'm at.
Bert the Kitten · 22d
Maybe the problem is she has been doing this for 50 years.
Adrian Whapcaplett · 22d
Imagine apologizing to Sam Alito

Dementia also affects friendly, chipper access journalists
Benj · 22d
Yeah, I dunno how one recovers from such a reckless mistake...
thrashballs · 22d
She should announce he own retirement
shan · 22d
I wasn’t worried about alitos feelings, but sure, apologies to him
@pcrritesgood.bsky.social · 22d
However, if this is the thing that makes him decide to not retire she has just done the world a huge favor. We want him alive and well and serving through January 2029.

Why is she apologizing to that ghoul?
AJ · 22d
She considers that the worst mistake of her career? Not reporting on RBG's cancer return or acknowledging always how they were friends and yet she reported on SCOTUS? And she didn't verify?
Sex Crazed Salt Shaker of Death · 21d
She should have just said it was wishful thinking and walked away.
Rav · 22d
What?? She “misheard?”
Summer of Our Disrespekt · 22d
She ruined his big reveal that he hates the 14th Amendment more than anyone ever has hated anything.
NaciFan · 22d
50 years was at least 1 too many apparently.
Spence Reynaldo · 22d
He’ll live. Maybe you don’t need to kiss his ass over it, Nina. It’s not like he’s a Haitian asylum seeker who just learned that he’s likely to be tortured and/or killed in the near future thanks to Alito and his buddies.
Amy Hoy · 22d
i always love it when an “explanation” of a mistake makes it clear the mistake was even more egregious than it first appeared
n0j · 22d
worst professional mistake... so far!
EARNED MY SPURS & UNABLE TO CURB MY CUSSING 🐎 · 22d
Nina will undoubtedly have a sleepless night.
clownpenis.fartlow · 22d
fuck Alito's feeling but she could also say "also I am retiring"
Trixie Belden, Schoolgirl Shamus · 22d
Not the announcement I want to hear about Alito
moonbird 𓅇 ☾your dreams matter☽ · 22d
Totenberg is careful to such an extent that I clinch. I truly wonder if there was an embargo on the announcement & someone blinked.
danstark · 22d
We are trusting that Alito didn't betray her with a final embarrassment before what will be his upcoming announcement? As compromised as @ninatotenberg.bsky.social is, and as far as @npr.org has fallen in their journalistic standards, this smells like something different than "oops".
@cyberadvisor.bsky.social · 22d
Not as brutal as Alito's massacre of the Constitution.
David Welton · 22d
I know what else I would like to say to Alito. I could probably even find a way to say most of it on air
Brooke · 22d
Maybe they shouldn't have fired all their editors, just a thought
