Dying shrieks filled the air and blood soon soaked the ground, as well as the torn limbs and bodies of the fallen. Velimiar looked around for Braelyn, noting that she had vanished. Hiding, are we? he thought. We'll see how long that lasts. "Braelyn," he called out, his voice ringing out like a warning bell as fire began to emerge from his hands. "Where are you?"
“Good morning Giselle,” the dragonkin greeted. “G’mornin, Kram.” Giselle had a thick accent that reminded Mathius of Haltack, and yet it wasn’t quite the same. “We got in some o’ those fruit pastries that ye like. Who’s yer friend?” “This is Mathius. He is a new member of the guild. Mathius, this is Giselle, our food attendant. If you’re nice to her, she saves the best snacks for you.” “Don’t be givin’ away my secrets now, ye rascal!” the woman teasingly scolded him. “Pleasure ta meet ye, Mathius.”

Except me, obviously.” Braelyn raised an eyebrow. “You must not have many friends if you honestly think that.” He flashed her a cocky grin. “Yet I got you to come here with me.” She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop the smile that crossed her face. “Are we friends?” “I’d like to be.” There was a soft honesty in his voice now. “I haven’t met many people like you, to be honest. Any time someone figures out what I’m capable of, they turn the other way.” Her heart filled with sympathy. “I suppose I understand that, but still. I like to think there’s more to people than just what they do.” “You’re a breath of fresh air,” Jace said smoothly, finishing his sweet bread.
“It’s open,” a female voice called from inside, and Braelyn’s heart leapt with recognition. “Go on,” Mathius told the blonde, stepping to the side. She nodded. With a shaking hand, she reached for the doorknob and turned it, pushing the door open and letting the midmorning sunlight stream into the Brightlanders’ front office. Before she took a single step inside, there was a sound that sounded like a half sob, followed by footsteps, and then Braelyn was suddenly pulled into a tight embrace. “My darling girl,” Ellienne said softly. “It is a relief to see you.” “Ellienne!” Braelyn’s eyes watered as she rested her head against the elf’s shoulder. The comforting, familiar scent of jasmine and oak filled her nose. “I’m glad to see you too.” After a moment, Ellienne extended her arm to Mathius. “Come here, my boy.”
