My attention fixed on the way his hips wiggled in time with the movement of the knife. His T-shirt cupped his shoulders snugly, and a narrow strip of skin showed at his lower back when he stretched for the pepper mill. How had I sat at that table every day for weeks and been so utterly oblivious when Jay was right there in front of me that whole time? I wasn’t oblivious anymore. I was wide awake: all-seeing, all-knowing, all-feeling. I’d touched that strip of skin, I’d kissed the soft swell of his delts, I’d wrapped my hands around that slim waist and dipped my thumbs into the twin dimples above his hipbones.

“Do you get it now?” Chas asked, his words dripped in Jay’s ear but his eyes never leaving me. “He wants you. He wants you so bad he can’t even say it. So bad it scares him.” A soft noise of protest died in my throat. I wasn’t scared. Jay swallowed, the sound impossibly loud in the quiet room as we all three looked at each other, watching, waiting…. “Why don’t you get on your knees?” Chas suggested, punctuating the words with soft kisses pressed against Jay’s ear, his temple, the sharp point of his cheekbone. “Show him what that clever mouth of yours can do.”

My cheeks colored. “I’ve thought about that morning too.” “You have?” “More than once,” I admitted. Something profound had shifted within me that day. It had just taken me a while to realize it. His smile turned feral and when he spoke, it was directly into my ear. “What do you think about?” I shuddered, eyes falling closed as his tongue licked inside, short-circuiting my nerves. “Y-You said I smelled nice.” He huffed an amused laugh and pressed his face against my neck, inhaling deeply. “I did. You do.” Jesus, he was going to kill me.
“Chas, stop.” Jay broke the kiss and averted his face. “This isn’t cool. He’s not into it.” “Yes, he is.” Chas grinned at me around Jay. “Look at him if you don’t believe me.” Jay’s gaze fell to my crotch and I hastily covered myself. Nothing was showing, I was sure of it, but the movement alone gave me away. Jay looked up, shock momentarily widening his eyes before they fixed on mine and his pupils dilated. I should leave. Just walk out. It wasn’t even worth the confrontation. Chas obviously wasn’t going to listen to anything I said, and while he might have been right about some things, that didn’t give him the right to ride roughshod over me and Jay like this. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t kind. It wasn’t the behavior of my best friend, the man I’d known since I was fourteen, the man I’d trust with my life, and in that moment, the betrayal cut deep.

Images flickered in the darkness behind my eyelids like distant lightning strikes. The shift of muscles over shoulder blades as an arm flexed. Damp, blond hair plastered to the back of a slender neck. Full lips curved into a welcoming smile as brilliant hazel eyes assessed my body before focusing on my face. I didn’t have as much dating experience as Chas, but even I’d recognized the subtle once-over and understood what it meant. Chas hadn’t lied about Jay being into me. And—oh, fuck—I think he was right about the feeling being mutual. What the fuck was I supposed to do with that?
Chas laughed, making us jump. It wasn’t a happy sound. “You’re both ridiculous,” he said, snatching a beer off the table. “Meaning what?” I demanded, not even trying to keep a growl out of my tone. My nerves were frayed to ribbons. “The pair of you sitting there, both rock hard I’ll bet, and both too dumb to admit what you’re feeling and do something about it.” He opened the can with a crack and a hiss and took a long drink. “It’s pathetic.” “Fuck you,” I bit back, humiliation burning in my veins. “Why don’t we start with fucking him?” He looked pointedly at Jay. I looked from Chas to Jay, meeting his wide amber eyes. He looked as shocked as I felt by this turn of events. “Fine.” Chas banged the beer back on the table. “If you’re too chickenshit to do it, you can just watch.”
