So a week ago today my family and I gathered at home to see our dog Mugen off to the great beyond. He was fourteen and was not responding to treatment for an inflamed gallbladder, which was starting to affect his liver, which made it impossible to continue his arthritis meds. In short, it was time.

Fourteen years ago when we got him we'd just moved into our house with a huge yard, more than big enough to give a dog some romping space. My husband very much wanted a dog. I assumed I was a total cat person. Having been bit by a dog when I was quite small, I wasn't a fan of canines.
