Withdrawal from the Race - January 25, 2026 After deep reflection and conversations with my family, my team, and trusted community partners, I have decided to withdraw from the race for Congress in California’s 5th District. I am profoundly grateful to every person who gathered signatures, made calls, hosted meet‑and‑greets, donated, or simply shared encouragement. My supporters included many prominent local Democrats who are, and continue to be, deeply engaged with their communities. Building this campaign has reinforced what I already believed: the people of CA‑05 care deeply about their neighbors, their communities, and the future of our democracy. I entered this race aligned with the values many of us organize around: defending democracy, protecting civil rights, and holding power accountable. But I also need to be candid about what it takes to run a congressional campaign. In this cycle, there has not been sufficient campaign infrastructure for Indivisible‑aligned candidates to build the kind of districtwide operation required at this level, especially in a large rural district like ours. I remain proud of the movement we are part of, and I am not stepping away from the work. I will continue working locally, supporting candidates who can govern with integrity, and advocating for stronger, earlier, and more equitable support for grassroots and Indivisible‑aligned candidates in future cycles. According to this Washington Post report, on September 2nd, Pete Hegseth gave an unlawful order to kill all of the occupants of a boat in the Caribbean, alleging that they were drug traffickers. He provided no evidence to support his claims. And even if the claims were at all true, we cannot legally kill drug traffickers outright. In this strike, two people survived, and then were killed in a second strike, to fulfill Hegseth’s order. According to Todd Huntley, who advised Special Operations forces for seven years at the height of the U.S. counterterrorism campaign as a military lawyer: even in warfare, killing the survivors if they were no longer able to fight “would in essence be an order to show no quarter, which would be a war crime.” This is murder. This is a war crime. Congress, not the Executive, has the power to declare war. When senior officials issue or carry out unlawful orders, accountability isn’t optional. It’s our duty. The impeachment process begins in the House, and it should begin for Pete Hegseth. We owe our service members, our laws, and the people of this district nothing less than the full measure of oversight the Constitution demands.
