Saruman from The Lord of the Rings saying "We must join with him, Gandalf." This is the good wizard Gandalf's former friend and ally, the head of their order, advocating for joining the dark lord Sauron rather than resisting. This seems motivated by a combination of seeking power and gain for himself, and a cynical fatalistic idea that Sauron's victory for evil and destruction of Middle Earth is the inevitable future, so the smart move is that you might as well accept it and get in on it. He's wrong, and it ultimately costs him everything. When did Saruman The Wise abandon reason for madness? A wizard should know better!
