In the case of Fiji, the "myth of the lazy native" was used by the British to sow the seeds of future intergroup violence through their differential treatment of Indian labourers/i-Taukei Fijians, while completely denying accountability. Recent years have seen increased efforts towards reconciliation between i-Taukei and Fiji-Indian Communities, including relaxed visa stipulations for descendants of Fijian Girmityas who wish to return to the country of their ancestors. Similar conversations are happening to various extents in many other regions that have historically used indentured labour, led not by the colonisers who created these ambiguous circumstances in the first place, but by the resultant Communities. These are fascinating and nuanced histories, and although it's ultimately very bittersweet with many questions that will remain unanswered and unrectified, I am so proud to honour this history as part of my own.
