Had an uncanny valley call today with a chatbot. My local fuel oil provider was bought out a couple of years ago by a larger conglomerate but up to now they have basically had their own people on the phone when I call the local number. Today, the main company answered the phone and the women's voice was almost perfectly normal. She said thank you for calling and what could she help me with. Maybe I should have noticed that there was no background noise, but sometimes people are working from home and it's quiet. I noted that the local company had texted me about my pricing plan so I was calling back. The woman then responded with a longer description of how my local company normally manages pricing plans and how they are set up yearly and whatever. By this time, the response had been a little too generic and gone on a little longer than a regular person would have.Normally they just say "ok, can I have your name and address" or whatever.Instead the comment ended with "would you like me to connect you to a local representative." I said "yes" but apparently was no heard because the previous details were basically, but not exactly repeated and the question came again as to whether I wanted to be connected to a representative.That time it heard me and I was put on hold for what I can only assume ended up being a real human. What was annoying was how realistic it sounded to begin with.Basically trying to make me think I was talking to a real person instead of normal automated system.That is uncanny to me because I still feel like they are trying to trick me.Maybe someday I'll call and assume that every human is a machine and so I won't feel "tricked" but that isn't a future I'm looking forward to. What problem is this really solving for them or me?I had to explain my issues twice--once to a bot, and once to the human.Their system had to direct me to the same human for any issue--it's just customer service for oil delivery, there aren't a bunch of different responders....
