A shiny, perfectly straight ribbon of serial trapezoid sections floating in the water bath of a diamond knife. These are sections from a mouse brain embedded in plastic, each section is 70 nm thin!
Mouse cortex imaged with array tomography. There is a red neuron in the middle that is stained with a GABA antibody. A dozen of blue nuclei are surrounding it, and myelinated axons looking like white tubes are interwoven all around them. And all of this is sprinkled with red dots, the inhibitory synaptic boutons labeled with GABA.
Immunofluorescence array tomography image from human cortex. Several colorful neurons can be seen.This is a volume reconstruction from ~30 serial sections, 70 nm each, that were labeled with three different antibodies. Yellow lipofuscin granules surround the blue nuclei of some of the neurons.
