true story: May parent's Anniversary was on Juneteenth. THey've since passed. But it was what happened to them afterwards when they were diving the car with the cans tied on it. All the black folks were coming up and hugging them, shaking hands, congratulating - because they got married on that day

Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox in Va in April. The war ended in May at Palmito Ranch. Transcontinental telegraph completed in 1861. But the South could not lift a finger to tell Texas that slavery was over until late June. It was the last chance to spit on freedom. Happy Juneteenth, America.

Slavery continues in the United States limited only to being the punishment for a crime. Explicitly authorized by the Constitution. More people are subjected to this condition here than anywhere else in the world. We sell their labor to private companies. They’re disproportionately Black men.

I think the next President who cares about the people should put forth a reparations bill for those two stolen years to the descendants of those Texans who labored for free and had their time and money stolen from them. Then do it for all of us.

I first heard Keb’ Mo’ on NPR’s Morning Edition in the early 90s, and was instantly hooked. I sat in my car in the parking lot at work and listened to the whole segment. Keb’ Mo’ made me late for work, but it was more than worth it. 🎼😎🎵
