Back at the 1956 NAB convention, on this date, the Ampex Corporation demonstrated its first commercial video magnetic tape recorder, the VRX 1000. The crowd of engineers at the National Association of Broadcasters gathering was aghast when they were unable to discern a difference in quality between live video and playbacks recorded moments earlier. Differentiating the video picture from grainy film or poor quality kinescopes, engineers described the TV picture played from tape as closest to a photograph. This giant reel-to-reel monster with its two-inch wide tape sold for close to $75,000 with taxes and shipping, that's close to $1 million in today's money! So many were ordered at the convention that day, on the spot, that it took months to build them all. The first use: time shifting for the different time zones. Believed to be the first such delayed re-broadcast was a CBS evening newscast with anchor Douglas Edwards. Repeating programming for the western time zones used to be a crazy affair of broadcasting filmed kinescopes that were almost still damp from developing fluid - they called them "wet kines." Then came variety shows and dramas - if you had hands like a surgeon, you could actually edit the tape once you located the sync pulses. It was done meticulously with a special fluid, a microscope and blade. You can see a tech editing in the photo. That kind of physical splicing continued through the end of the 1960s. An hour of NBC's quick-cut "Laugh-In" had as many as 100-plus hand-made physical splices, and that surgery was performed by one editing specialist over several days each week. That tape with all the edits was immediately dubbed to protect against the splices becomming undone during on-air playback.

The DAR’s refusal to let Anderson perform at Constitution Hall became a national story when First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt publicly resigned her membership in the organization. In her resignation letter she wrote, “You had the opportunity to lead in an enlightened way and it seems to me that your organization has failed.” In response, Walter White, executive secretary of the NAACP and Secretary of State Harold Ickes arranged for Anderson to give a public concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939. Philip David Ochs (/ˈoʊks/; December 19, 1940 – April 9, 1976) was an American songwriter, protest singer (or, as he preferred, "topical singer"), and political activist. Ochs was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, and political commentary. He wrote about 200 songs in the 1960s and 1970s and released eight albums.[1] Ochs performed at many political events, including the 1968 Democratic National Convention, mass demonstrations sponsored by the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, civil rights rallies, student events, and organized labor events. Ochs initially described himself as a democratic socialist[2][3] but grew more radical after the police riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.[4] After years of prolific writing in the 1960s, Ochs' mental stability declined in the 1970s as he struggled with bipolar disorder and alcoholism. He died by suicide on April 9, 1976.

When songwriters Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart were fighting for creative control of the music on a new TV show about a fictional band—the Monkees—they needed something instantly convincing. Something modern. Something undeniable. So they gave guitarist Louie Shelton a simple directive: “Come up with something Beatle-ish… like ‘Ticket to Ride.’” Shelton responded with a chiming, forward-pulling guitar riff—the opening to “Last Train to Clarksville.” At that point, the song wasn’t even finished. When the TV executives arrived, all they heard was that riff. It was enough. That single guitar figure helped secure Boyce & Hart’s deal, defined the Monkees’ musical direction, and launched one of the most dominant pop runs of the 1960s. Released in August 1966, “Last Train to Clarksville” reached No. 1 that November, becoming the Monkees’ first chart-topper. By 1967, the group would sell more records than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined. All of it traced back to a conscious attempt to capture the feel of George Harrison’s “Ticket to Ride” riff —that slightly weighted rhythm, the chiming tone, the sense of motion that had already become a new pop language. As Shelton said, the lesson was simple: you hear a great guitar lick once—and it grabs you.
Edward James Kendrick(December 17, 1939[2] – October 5, 1992), better known as Eddie Kendricks, was an American tenor singer and songwriter.
