En la mañana del 31 de diciembre de 1937, en la localidad de Caudé, cerca de Teruel, explotó una bomba frente al coche en el que viajaban Philby junto a los corresponsales Edward J. «Eddie» Neil (de Associated Press), Bradish John-son (de la revista Newsweek) y Ernest Sheepshanks (de la agencia Reuters). Posteriormente se sospechó que la explosión la había causado él mismo, ya que uno de sus compañeros había descubierto su identidad de espía soviético. Muy satisfecho por los artículos que escribía Philby, el general Franco en persona le entregó, el 2 de marzo de 1938, la Cruz Roja al Mérito Militar.
