Dear sound effect and music asset creators; Please stop using generative AI for your thumbnails. You're putting a giant label on your work that gives the impression it's low effort slop, even when the actual content might be excellent stuff!

I would immediately not trust that any of these sounds were made by actual humans from the thumbnails alone. I'm actually about 1000x more likely to download a sound pack if the thumbnail is written in comic sans on a plain white background!

I was wondering, how can they post "no AI" when they use an AI generated thumbnail? It's part of the product, so it should count 🤔

I just assume asset pack creators that are using ai art covers are making genai assets. If i want to make a 100% no-ai game, i'm going to avoid creators and assets that have the slightest possibility of containing genai content

This is unfortunately how I feel too, I've bought stuff in the past from creators that are now selling those same assets but with gross AI packaging. Huge bummer

On the contrary I like that it’s there because it helps me weed for creators who care deeply about the quality of work they produce. AI thumbnails are a red flag for me to stay away.

what's funny is that a clean, minimalist design will probably actually stand out way better against the chaotic cluttered mess of generated slop

AI slop thumbnails instantly tell me - this person is trying to scam you!

smt · Jun 18

seen this becoming very popular for mods for a lot of games, long gone are the cute ms paint scrawls depicting what your mod does :(

Augh · Jun 18

honestly you got to realise people arent even clicking, they are just actively hubbing you to get past to possibly real things

This goes for anything. For instance, I saw Gen AI on some cat food once and my first thought was if they're too lazy to photo a cat, they're probably too lazy to ensure the food is safe for my cat. Gen AI only tells the consumer you're lazy and likely have a poor product.

For sure. Any time someone submits hand-crafted sounds to OpenGameArt, but they include AI album art, I have to double check it for AI signatures.

Chris Huth · Jun 18

i mean, once they put slop on it, it *is* now low effort slop. slop is infectious.

Enrel Keeper · Jun 18

I get it, make it look fancy and people will buy. I see it though and it gives me AI generated and I don't want anything to do with it. its ok if you don't have the art design skills to make a good looking thumbnails, I would prefer a plain one rather than an AI generated one all day.

An AI thumbnailed asset pack is an instant pass from me. If they're willing to do it for that, they're willing to do it for the assets themselves. Nope.

yevvie · Jun 18

i got into making music this year and the amount of music producers who think visual artists don't deserve a living and AI is 'free' are astounding refused to put my money into any VSTs or sample packs that had AI thumbnails... but it's most of them 😭😭😭

Nick Reineke · Jun 18

The aesthetic is so repulsive that I don't even care to investigate what quality the actual asset is, I'd just skip it instantly for someone who isn't aligned with laziness.

🕹️ algi 🇭🇺 🇪🇺 · Jun 18

Like, how am I supposed to know that the asset itself is handmade?

Dragan "Zeka" Ciric · Jun 18

All of these are low effort slops. You put AI generated thumbnail, it automatically makes everything else connected to it into a slop.

Nacho AB · Jun 18

I don't understand why people do this, I see it as well in assets that are not music or sfx in Unity Store and itch. I don't know if it is because most of the people that buy assets don't care or what. It's annoying

CucumberBush · Jun 18

Any asset, product or whatever it is that has a genAI image on it I immediately ignore, it screams lazy and slop to me and it‘s a shame when some genuinely talented people use it

Just released my first audio asset packs and paid my artist! Help me recoup the costs and enjoy my hard hard work :) robertfrostiii.itch.io/robs-adventu...

A simple filter can do the trick...I'm not sure why ppl insist on doing this. The pushback has NOT been quiet. I enjoy cooking up something original for the music I compose...

I unsubscribed from Boom's mailing list the first time they sent me an email with AI art in it. If the art's AI, how do I know the sound isn't?
