I could have simply left her name on the comic in the first place but since I was already cropping out two unnecessary panels the artist’s signature seemed out of place, like I was somehow involving her personally in my critique of Australia’s income tax system, and I wouldn’t wish that evil upon anyone. Our income tax system is largely the responsibility of John Howard, whose promised to replace income taxes with a GST, then after imposing a 10% GST, made no effort to adjust the income tax system accordingly? The company I work for pays taxes then gives me a salary which I pay taxes on, then half the shit I pay for is 10% more expensive because I have to pay extra taxes on top of my already taxed dollars. I understand we need to pay taxes as a society to ensure that critical services are funded and I am always happy to do my fair share. I actually relish reading my income tax statement and seeing exactly how many of my dollars went to funding public education and health care, and I think for the most part our governments spends those dollars wisely. But come ON, how many taxes do I have to pay? Did you know there are some overseas vendors who won’t sell to Australia because they have to pay GST to our government? We didn’t used to have to pay taxes on overseas purchases, but Gerry Harvey got his panties in a twist and lobbied the government because online shopping was threatening his precious retail monopoly.
