He pressed on Rei's open wound to stem the flow, but the blood poured through the gaps of his fingers. Futile. We could smell how futile it was. Rei was going to die. They sank to the floor as he continued to hold the wound. Etti stared at them. He understood. He had to.

The night sky was as clear and bright as it could be looming above the glittering light of the city. No more than a couple pin holes in that curtain that shifted in hue from the day's blue through reds and purples giving way to the night's black, it offered the vaguest suggestion of constellations that the southern hemisphere held. A pity. It was the first cloudless sky of the season signaling the start of fall, and of course the damned city lights of Yinzburgh would keep her from enjoying its comfort at a time like this. This wasn't just a pity, it was a tragedy.
He scanned for the exit ramp and launched towards it the moment saw land beyond it. Those words that woke him five years ago meant so much more now than the fear they instilled and the fading nightmares they beckoned. “You need to do something different, that's for sure. We're going out tonight.” Bert pushed off the counter to start heading towards the bath. He stopped near Mori and gave his shoulder a light shove, wobbling him in his chair. “This house would be too big for one person if I left. Wanna talk about me getting a wife—you're the one with the legacy you care about, Matsuba-han.”
“Mori, sunshine, get up.” Playful teasing in a voice that he didn't expect to hear for a few more days accompanied the slide of a shoji, welcoming mid-afternoon sun and the hint of the beginning of Rinna’s cool fall air into the room. A short fabric curtain of noren lining the other side of the wall, separating the room from its north-facing small outdoor balcony, did no more than merely diffuse the daylight's harshness. He rolled away from the opened doorway and buried his face in a pillow to hide from the light under a mop of disheveled dark blond hair and grumbled, the sound one part disappointed, one part nauseous. “I had the same vision again,” Mori said flatly and muffled. “Did ya now?” the teasing voice replied with a lack of surprise. He let out a sigh before opening an adjacent shoji and stepped out onto the third-floor balcony.
She wondered to herself—a distraction, really, from her angst—the many opportunities these contracts offered, all the technology and comforts that beluan, either by inspiration or ingredient, gave them. It seemed a tad one-sided, but that errant thought fizzled as the glow from Patty, the name she gave hers as a child, stopped for a moment as she stretched and curled up into a comfortable ball. Her glow soon resumed slow and steady with deep, sleepy breathing. The benefits were obviously mutual, otherwise they wouldn't choose to take them on.
