The danger of listening to adhd ‘influencers’ online, as opposed to doctors, is 90% of their hacks, are leaning into the parts of adhd that can make the experience miserable, and lead to burning out. For instance! Once you understand that your brain struggles to make the chemicals that initiate action, and that it’s learned that things like urgency, stress and shame produce good substitutes, you have to go through the grief of having to see that you have been engineering the crisis and conflict in your life to keep you functional, aware or not. There are good sources of these chemicals too, like joy, novelty and exercise, but they are much much harder to initiate without help and support from other people, and without being medicated. So when some butthead online says, ‘tell your friend to come over, and then the panic about your dirty house will make you clean it all in an hour’, they are encouraging you to do the masking that will burn you out by the time you’re 30. I built a career on being good at desperate last minute projects that were on fire, and then constantly trashed that same good reputation by being terrible when given reasonable kind timelines with no pressure. If chronic procrastination, shame about failure or the opinion of others, and impossible standards are what you think is normal for creative people, and how you’ve been powering through life, please go for an assessment. People have hurt me throughout my life, but I now, age goddamn 42, have to face that I sought them out because I didnt know how to function without it, and didnt know there was help. Ignore the internet. Talk to a professional, not some goober chasing views and validation.

Storytime! When I was a young bean starting out at the first comic studio I worked at, we used to draw our pages in pencil, and a second artist would then draw them again in ink, using a light box to be guided by our pencils, but adding their own flair. This was because the limits of digital colouring and printing at the time meant that bold clear drawings were best. Also because one artist doing everything would slow the whole process down. Being young and full of vinegar, myself and a few other artists worked long hours of overtime learning to use wacoms and photoshop instead. It meant more control over the final product, and quicker, (subjectively) better work. In the first year, we were patted on the head and given bonuses. By the second year, it was the standard, and expected, and our timelines had halved, not to mention that the inking staff had either found new roles or lost employment. By the third year we were doing the colouring ourselves too, and the design staff who handled finishing, lettering and desktop publishing had dropped to one person from three. I could continue with similar stories about animation, and how storyboarding has changed from a series of rough concepts for each shot to detailed and timed to the second animatics, or illustration, and how masters like Frank Frazetta used to be able to produce a single book cover in a month, and make reasonable living doing so, but I think you all can see where I’m going with this.
