As a mother of two, there are certain tasks Christine Landis won't do. She has never clipped her children's toenails-too anxious for that, she said, so the nanny handles it. Most nights, the family assistant takes care of bath time. Landis also hands off what she calls "repetitive play," reading the same book five times or watching er toddler open and close a door for 45 minutes. To make this possible, Landis, who lives in San Diego, spends roughly $250,000 a year running a household staff that includes a family assistant who lives on the property, a weekend nanny, a personal chef and a housekeeper. One nanny isn't cutting it anymore. Wealthy working parents like Landis are employing teams of people to handle the work of raising their children, including specialists to potty-train their toddlers, teach their kids to ride a bike, manage school applications and pack their trunks for summer camp. Call it CEO parenting: treating the modern family as a small enterprise and delegating low-joy tasks.

These features of the parvenu mentality can be recognized in the essential traits of Stalinist culture: its nationalism, the aesthetics of 'socialist realism', and even the system of power itself. The parvenu combines a peasant-like subservience to authority with an overmastering desire to share in it; once raised to a certain level in the hierarchy he will grovel to his superiors and trample on those beneath him. Stalin was the idol of parvenu Russia, the incarnation of its dreams of glory. The parvenu state must have a pyramid of power and a leader who is worshipped even while he scourges his subordinates.

But then the moment of bad faith returns, because academics and other professionals really do believe that some of the work put out by their peers is better than the alternatives. To remain a professional at all, they must believe in their own capacity for judgment on such matters. Status in these settings condenses out of the high regard of highly-regarded others, and it produces implicit, loose, but real rankings all the time. That makes a general moral objection to rankings harder to sustain in a full-throated way. The end of June meant exam results. The tension that came with the walk down the corridor was palpable, especially for those close to any of the boundaries, whether you were hoping to scrape a pass or desperate to find your name toward the top of the list. EXCURSUS ON KADI JUSTICE, COMMON LAW AND ROMAN LAW The "rational" interpretation of law on the basis of strictly formal concepts can be juxtaposed to a kind of adjudication that is primarily bound to hallowed traditions. Individual cases which cannot be unambiguously decided by tradition it either settles by concrete revelation (oracle, prophetic dicta, or ordeal—that is, by charismatic justice) or-and only the following two cases interest us hereby a) informal judgments rendered in terms of concrete ethical or other practical valuations ("Kadi-justice," as R. Schmidt? has fittingly called it); or, b) formal judgments rendered, not by subsumption under rational concepts, but by drawing on "analogies" and by depending upon and interpreting concrete "precedents." This is "empirical justice. Kadi-justice knows no rational "rules of decision" (Urteilsgründe) whatever, nor does empirical justice of the pure type give any reasons which in our sense could be called rational. The concrete valuational character of Kadi-justice can advance to a prophetic break with all tradition. Empirical justice, on the other hand, can be sublimated and rationalized into a "rechnique." Since non-bureaucratic forms of domination display a peculiar co-existence of strict traditionalism and of arbitrariness and lordly discretion, combinations and transitional forms between these two principles are very trequent. Even today in England, as Mendelssohn has demonstrated, a broad substratum of justice is actually Kadi-justice to an extent that is hardly conceivable on the Continent. The justice of German juries, which excludes a statement of the reasons for their verdict, often functions in practice in the same way. The weather was unusually hot that summer and Wittgenstein's room on the second floor was often very uncomfortable. I replied that if this were done great numbers of insects would enter and prove even more disagreeable than the heat. Wittgenstein doubted that this was so. Wittgenstein didn't believe this, and when he went out for a walk later that day he made a point of looking at a number of houses in order to see whether their windows were screened.
