What's being ignored here is that the social interactions is not a small add-on. Social interaction is not part of the gameplay, it is the gameplay. Club Penguin is a social playground. What items you wear impacts how players interact with you, and if you have items that are impossible to obtain or are supposed to be rare, it gives you social clout that you simply did not earn. That is a material impact in the gameplay.
