They also suggest the CGT changes mean they will lose 50 per cent of their capital gains to taxation when they eventually sell their businesses. But that also is untrue. Significant concessions will still apply to all small businesses, defined as those with aggregated annual turnovers below $2 million or with net assets below $6m. Any small business that has been owned for 15 years or more will retain the most generous of concessions — a 100 per cent CGT exemption. For those sold within 15 years, the capital gain is automatically reduced by 50 per cent or indexation — whichever is greater — through what’s called the Small Business Active Asset Reduction measure.

The fake papers thanked Starfleet Academy, cited funding from the Professor Sideshow Bob Foundation and the University of Fellowship of the Ring, and stated mid-paper that the entire thing was made up. Google's Gemini told users it was caused by blue light. Perplexity cited its prevalence at one in 90,000 people. ChatGPT advised users whether their symptoms matched. The fake research was then cited in a peer-reviewed journal that only retracted it after Nature contacted the publisher.
What about the role of social media? Although perceptions of social media are overwhelmingly negative, researchers have found associations between its use and children’s well-being to be quite nuanced. In a study published online in January that followed more than 100,000 adolescents for three years, researchers concluded that the relation between well-being and social media use is “complex and nonlinear.” Studies have also found that kids who spend more time on social media become more empathetic over time, not less, and that teens who use social media more spend more time with their friends offline, too. There is, of course, no question that social media can pose risks—but Edlynn and Konrath note that technology may be helping kids connect with others, find support, and learn about world issues in ways that make them more involved in philanthropy and activism. It “can make them more thoughtful, conscious citizens,” Edlynn says.

Measles risk continues to increase as more cases identified However, a key change to Australia’s vaccination schedule in the 1990s – moving from a one-dose measles vaccination schedule to a two-dose measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) schedule – has led some people to mistakenly believe they are fully vaccinated after receiving only one dose of the MMR vaccine. Anyone unsure whether they have received two doses should get vaccinated, particularly if they plan to travel overseas, as additional doses are safe, NSW Health advises.

Government reassures fuel supply in ‘excess’ in Australia Labor is facing pressure from the opposition over panic buying and some fuel shortages being felt across the country, while it tries to reassure the public there is enough supply. The housing minister, Clare O’Neil, and shadow attorney general, Michaelia Cash, were sparring on Sunrise this morning. O’Neil said Australians should feel confident, and again (for the billionth time) tells everyone to stop panic buying. "We have an excess of fuel in the country that’s in excess of the legal requirement. The reason that we are seeing issues [across the] country is because people are buying more fuel than they need. We are managing this on a daily basis, and people should feel confident in our system of fuel security as a country and buy what they need. And we will work through these issues with petrol stations around the country." Cash said it wasn’t good enough to blame families and farmers for the shortages, and said the government should be doing more to address supply shortfalls. "It’s everybody else’s fault. Dear Julian Leeser, As an Australian, I am appalled by the LNP's attitude to and scaremongering about the Australian women and children held in Syria. They are Australian citizens and have every right to come home. Syria and the United States have been asking western countries to repatriate their citizens for years. Australia should have repatriated all our women and children as soon as it was possible. The failure of the Australian government, both LNP and Labor, to do so is disgraceful. Moreover, they are NOT Syria's responsibility. We should not be abrogating our responsibility onto a country that is struggling to rebuild from years of violence committed by both ISIS and their own government. Angus Taylor's response to a journalist asking why they should be another country's responsibility, avoided the question and sounded very Trumpian. Our security services are capable of monitoring them on return and charging them if they committed criminal offences. Their children are innocent and describing them as "ISIS sympathisers" is beyond disturbing. Forcing them to continue to struggle to survive in horrific conditions could encourage possible radicalisation that may come back to bite us in the future. Threatening Australians with criminal charges is also disgusting. Dr Jamal Rifi is a humanitarian, trying to do the job that the Australian government has purposely failed to do. The LNP's bigoted rhetoric encourages Islamophobia, which in person primarily targets Muslim women, and could stoke violence. That is not being socially responsible or promoting social cohesion.
Judge permanently bars DoJ from releasing Jack Smith's report on Trump documents In a ruling on Monday, US federal judge Aileen Cannon permanently prohibited the justice department from releasing a report put together by former special counsel Jack Smith related to classified documents Trump kept at Mar-a-Lago. Cannon, based in Florida, had previously dismissed the case against Trump in mid-2024 because, she concluded, Smith had not been properly appointed to a role as special counsel. Smith continued to prepare a final report based on what he and his team had collected in the investigation, Cannon wrote in her ruling Monday. “To say this chronology represents, at a minimum, a concerning breach of the spirit of the Dismissal Order is an understatement, if not an outright violation of it,” she wrote of Smith continuing to create a report. Releasing the report would be a “manifest injustice” for the defendants, since the case didn’t go to a jury, she wrote. “The former defendants in this case, like any other defendant in this situation, still enjoy the presumption of innocence held sacrosanct in our constitutional order.”

I do not know this woman, have never met her, I don't even know her real name. But for a few sliding door moments, I could have been her, over and over again in so many situations. I found my old diary entries from back then, the incident I mentioned in my original post was not the only time time the rapists father harassed me. He tried to make me go outside with him, harassed me to dance with him, called me a frigid bitch multiple times when I wouldn't. I witnessed him try it on other girls my age as well. We were 12 and 13. He was 19 or 20. The town viewed it as "oh, that's just Jazza, he is harmless, just avoid being alone with him and you will be fine" and we had to accept that.
To Mr Burke, Home Affairs Minister, As an Australian, I am beyond disgusted at my government's treatment of the 'ISIS brides' and their children. They are Australian citizens. You should have repatriated them years ago. They are OUR responsibility, not Syria's. You are ignoring the possibility of coercive control on the part of their husbands or families. When asked about the videos that show Alex Pretti was unarmed before being shot and killed, Bovino said: “Many videos out there, many different accounts that you may see that I may see.” Folks, this why we have something called an investigation, to take what you’re talking about, to take those videos, to take witness statements, to take, officer statements, all those minute details that will paint a true picture, not a freeze frame concept, and paint a larger picture of what really happened. Bovino said that the operation in Minneapolis had originally been targeting Jose Huerta-Chuma, who he described as a dangerous undocumented immigrant who needed to be taken off the streets. He said Huerta-Chuma was in the process of being taken into custody when “agitators, rioters and anarchists” prevented the arrest. But the Minnesota Department of Corrections flatly contradicted Bovino’s characterization of Huerta-Chuma as having a “significant criminal history”. According to DOC records and Minnesota court data, the individual has never been in Minnesota DOC custody and has no felony commitments. DOC records also revealed an inconvenient detail: someone with that name was held in federal immigration custody in a local Minnesota jail in 2018, during Trump’s first administration, and was released by federal authorities under Trump’s watch.
Independent MP Bob Katter has unleashed an anti-immigration tirade, accusing groups of "living in little ethnic enclaves" and "hating Australians" as he called for migrants from the Middle East and North Africa to be banned from Australia. The Kennedy MP has held a press conference in front of a banner that read: "No migration without assimilation". Katter told reporters the government's gun reforms in the wake of last month's Bondi terror attack were a "diversion from the real problem, [which is] that the government let in two extremely dangerous people into this country". Accused Bondi gunman, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, was born in Australia and his father, Sajid Akram, was a permanent visa holder from India.
He also backed a push to broaden the new offence to capture hatred based on other inherent attributes such as gender identity, sexual orientation, age or disability. Independent Wentworth MP Allegra Spender has already indicated she would seek to move an amendment expanding the new offence to ensure those groups were also protected.

Cabinet minister Josh Frydenberg on Sunday strongly argued for change. Noting he had been on record for some time believing the words “offend” and “insult” should be removed, Frydenberg said: “I think that threshold, with ‘offend’ and ‘insult’ is too low. It’s invited complaints, which we’ve seen in the cases of QUT, as well as in the Bill Leak case.” Even if the cases were thrown out, there was the problem that the complaints were brought in the first place, and that became divisive and a distraction, he told Sky. Frydenberg, who is Jewish, said he was aware of the strongly-held views by people he respected in the Jewish community who did not want change. “This is one issue in which I disagree with them.
