Did you know your teeth are not actually made of bone? It’s
a common misconception. The major difference between the two
is that teeth are dead tissue while bones are alive.
Just imagine them sitting inside you, imitating your shape.
The image haunts me; my skeleton inside of me. Alive, just
as I am, but separate from me. I imagine it with a mind of
its own. It has hopes and dreams and fears and a hunger,
just as I do. But it remains trapped. My skin confines it.
Imprisoned in darkness, it is plotting its escape. I wonder,
can look out of my eyes. What does it see?
I move and the joints in my fingers pop, my spine clicks, I
feel it shifting inside of me. One day my skeleton will
break free. Late at night, alone in my bed, I worry about
what I will do when it happens. I imagine it breaking out of
my skin, leaving me weak and shapeless, just a heap of sinew
and tissue piles on the floor. I imagine it will pick me up,
cradle me in the crevice of its ribs, tugged away inside of
it, safe in the darkness, tugged away inside of it, safe in
the darkness.
It will hold me close and I will be protected by this new
cage around me, peeking out of the hollow of its eyes as it
walks the world.
At night it will plunge its stiff fingers through its ribs
and stroke my hair. Its fingers will wander over my lips, my
cheeks, and it will close my eyelids tenderly, and I will
sleep, and I will wait until it is my turn again to be in
the light.
