Here, the unicorn character has calmed down, with pinks replacing the bright reds again. In the background, the attendant with the hairbrush panics about it having caught fire, but this isn't about him. Ambroys puts on an expression of gentle sweetness. If it wasn't for his hair still smoking, it'd look as if he'd never become infuriated at all. He smoothly says: "I-- I'm sorry. I shouldn't get mad at you. I can't blame you for being jealous... knowing you're always aging and dying must be stressful. I promise you'll feel so much better if you put all those bad thoughts away and just let yourself enjoy the pretty pony prancing for you."

As an aside, he whispers: "while you can."

A brief comic drawn in response to a tumblr ask. The message reads: "Ambroys, you always strive to look as good as possible. Is that just because you're worried about what people might think if you let yourself go (even for a day)? Or are you just desperately seeking attention, because you fear you might lose it once you're aged?"
The first panel shows Ambroys, an anthro unicorn. He's a pretty-boy type character, colored in creams and golds, while everything surrounding him is colored rose-pink. He's being dressed in foppish Rococo-esque clothing and having his shining, literally sparkling hair brushes by valets. With wide-eyed concern, he addresses the asker with a volley of questions: "Uh, you know I don't have to give a shit about what 'people might think' since I'm, like, above mortals, right? Isn't it good that I want to look my best for you all anyway? You do get that i put in all this effort for YOUR benefit, don't you? Aren't you happier having me add something beautiful to your life? Is that not what you want?"

His question turns hostile: "Should I even care about what you people want when you're always so--" his surroundings turn darker and red instead of pink now, and the panel is a close-up of his face. Replacing worry is an expression of barely constrained rage. The ends of his hair have sparked into white-hot flames, and his eyes are unnaturally bright. He continues, his speech-bubbles ragged and fiery: "--fucking UNGRATEFUL?"

The first panel shows an anthro ermine woman. She is dressed in late Victorian clothing. She looks up at the viewer from under lowered brows, but her expression is carefully neutral. She holds a baby in her arms, who graps onto her dress. The baby looks altricial, with bulging, dark-circled eyes like a baby bird and transparent skin that shows his veins. The woman says: "My husband and parents often ask that very same question. I regret to have put forth an unsatisfactory effort, but I did... 'try.' Theopolis--this little one, who needn't be stared at--is my third-born."
In the second panel, we see a close-up of her face. She breaks eye-contact with the viewer, her brow slightly furrowed. The baby reaches up to grasp her face, and she lightly touches his small arm. She continues: "Before him, I bore two others. Two perfect, tiny bodies."
In the last panel, she grasps the child, her fingers trembling from the strength of her grip. The baby holds her in turn, his tiny claws digging into her back as he drools and chews on her dress' lapel. Both glare at the viewer, Jo gazes over her baby's head, her baby opening one corpse-pale eye. She finishes: "I will not suffer my bearing place becoming a grave again. I have carried enough corpses. I know the family thinks it terribly negligent of me to let this poor thing be the sole scion of our lineage. He is sickly. He is malformed. He is imperfect... and he is alive. I need nothing more of my last, my only son."

In the first panel, Theo-an small, nebbish-looking rat dressed in an old-fashioned suit-looks aside, hunching anxiously. He says: "I am not naive. I am aware that the duke does not, could not care as I care. He hardly knows me, and he never... never had the fortune to know her."
In the next panel, both Theo and the man he's speaking of, Hyden, are depicted. Hyden is a large, older-looking rabbit. On the right side of the panel, Hyden, somewhat disheveled looking, reaches his hand up to touch a ruby-colored cracked gem on his forehead. He stares forward, his brow furrowed. On the left, Theo is shown to have a similar-looking ruby gem implanted into his hand (though his implantation may have gone less well, given that the hand his gem is stuck in has turned black and veiny). Theo rubs the gem against his cheek, like a child might nuzzle a blanket or toy for comfort. The silhouette of a ghostly woman wearing the same gem around her neck hovers behind him, her thin, bony hands gently holding him. Words overlay the panel: "Yet I know him. I know his magic is as precious to him as Mother is to me. I know the agony of being ripped from your purpose, your power, a piece of your soul. I know that if we two half-men work together, we stand a better chance at making ourself whole than if he toiled apart. I know he knows that too."
In the final panel, we see Theo again, still hunched, but with his chin lifted and a slight smile on his face. He fidgets with his cravat as he says: "...though the duke is not the sort of man to weep for my sorrows, I cannot help but to- to hope, in my foolish, selfish way- that when we have reclaimed what was stolen from us, when he can finally know my mother as who she IS not WAS, he may yet shed a tear of joy."

The second panel pulls back, looking at him from above to reveal that he is leaning against one of the graves in a quiet snowbound graveyard. The shape of the grave casts a long shadow over his body in the shape of a coffin. He looks up at the sky, clutching himself as he continues: "my lungs draw breath, my heart beats, but I am no less a corpse than she. If her chance at life costs the rest of mine--it will have cost nothing at all."

Theo, a small, chubby anthro rat dressed in an old-fashioned suit and bowtie, replies: "Oh hell." He pauses, staring into the middle distance, gripping the side of his face with a gloved hand. After a pause, he continues: "I dearly hope that I don't. It is appalling enough that my father afflicted even ONE woman with carrying his lowly spawn."

At first, he does an unflattering mimicry of the question: "There are consequences to your actions, blablablah" before saying "Oh, please. You're boring me. I hear enough of this crap from Papa."

The next panel is his at ~30 years old. It has a sickly green palette. The same unicorn hunches, dressed only in a loosely tied robe which falls off his body. His hair is disheveled and his eyes are wild and ringed with dark eye bags. He has bandages on both his arms. He snarls: "Or maybe I AM playing the long game and you just don't get it 'cause of YOUR stupid little lifespan! Maybe one day I'll be right where I wanna be, and you'll be fucking DEAD!" In a weak afterthought, he adds "you... you think about that."

The last panel is labeled "~300 years old" and has a golden palette. The background is of churchlike stained glass. The same character is present, dressed richly in a priestly garment, visibly aged from his younger appearance, with streaks of silver and white in his long gold hair. With a weary grimace, he says: "Oh, I'd argue that immortality makes one far LESS impulsive. When you know you have an endless wealth of years, you can afford to wait... but a rash move can have you paying the price for a long... long... time."

The first panel shows an anthro rat man dressed in a suit. He sneers and says: "I will tell you what I told Hy--his Grace: I am not bathing anyone. Indeed, despite your pothering, I do not perform any courtesy unless I wish it. ...Do you believe that Duke Hyden is forcing me to assist him? By what means?"

In the next panel, a anthro rabbit (much larger than the rat) struggles to walk, while the rat looks concerned. A monologue continues over the panel: "Certainly not by strength. As you say, the man is feeble, sickly, slow. His legs are nearly double the length of mine, yet I am the one that must shorten my steps to allow him to keep pace. Without my ministering, his vigor would decline even further."

Next panel: the rabbit leans over the rat, gazing in wonder at flames he's conjured. "Not by spellwork. He is as harmless as a master marksman who has lost his sight. He was once the deadliest mage the world had ever known, but now he cannot conjure even a spark. Not without my help."

In the next panel, the rat is clad in a coronet and royal cape, which he drapes over the rabbit. "Not by sovereignty. In this age, I am nobility, a man of status, and he is no one, a man stripped of his power, his prestige, even his personhood. I alone respect his title. I alone am his ally in a world that despies him-no,worse than that-a world that does not even know he lives."

In the last panel, the rat looks askance at the viewer, a mix between a smirk and a snarl on his face. "So, you say there is an 'imbalance of power' between Duke Hyden and I. I say you are correct... though you have attributed that power to the wrong man."

The crawling rat man from earlier is in full view now: his glasses glint, but one crazed eye is visible behind their glare. He is also dressed in a suit, but the blood spattered across his face makes him look distinctly less civilized than the man he's currently bludgeoning with a fire poker. Though you don't see the other man, the splatter and the crimson-red trail of blood arcing over the assailant's head as he readies another blow don't paint a pretty picture of his fate.

The text boxes continue: "She would have understood. She would have done it to protect me too. Even so, I confess... she would not have made such a dreadful mess."

He's in a grand old manor, but a very neglected one. In the shadows, below his line of sight, there is another figure hidden in the shadows. His silhouette is that of another rat man, though rather than walking up the stairs he crouches and crawls, more animalistic, the lens of his glasses flashing like a predator's eyes in the dark. One can barely make out the fire poker in his hand.
In the final pinal, the first rat man has drawn back the curtain of a bed. His expression is one of horror; despite being indoors, his breath gives off a chilly fog. He stares down at the silhouette; it looks like the figure of a woman at rest. Behind him, the glasses of his pursuer glint in the pitch darkness.
Text boxes wind their way through all the panels, saying: "He knew he was not welcome. I had rid the manor of vermin before. Overthrown as patriach, he crept back as a thief, here to seize his 'entitlement;' my birthright. If he had not been stopped, he would have had me declared me. He would have taken my home away from me. He would have taken HER away from me."

True, I've suffered more than my share of tribulations... but if I had not suffered them, I may have become a different man, one who could not share his light with all of you. I would gladly endure each terrible wound of my past, now that I know the blood that I spilled would, one day, help flowers grow."
In the second panel, he looks askance, a fidgeting finger pressed to his cheek. He says: "That said... there are a few little things here and there that could have been done... differently."

In the second panel, the cutaway is gone, showing just the hand. Red, vein-like magical strings emanate from the stone, appearing to manipulate the man's fingers. He says: "At worst, the fingers of my left hand occasionally rebel, refusing my orders to straighten. Fortunately, the cause is also the cure for any incidents of digital noncompliance."

The next panel has a gray-purple colorscheme, showing it takes place in the past. An ermine woman dressed in Victorian attire channels flowing streams of magic into a single beam of light using a wand. Above the image, the man's monologue continues: "Most mages do not rely solely on the hands for casting. It is more prudent to use a focus. Magic is a savage force. It will fight against its domination like a wild animal. Only the unwise offer it their hand instead of a leash. Mother favored a wand for taming her more tempestuous spells."

Or maybe one of the stab wounds? ...I don't know which one of those would be more deadly for, um, anyone who isn't me." He looks down at himself. Ghostly impressions of arrows, a sword and a dagger pierce his body, showing where he's been wounded in the past.

Then he whips his head around to a figure standing behind him. She's a lioness. He says: "It won't kill me, obviously, but getting stabbed still hurts, so I don't want to experiment to see how big of a knife you can shove in me just because someone is curious."

The lioness, exasperated, says: "Fine!"

Ambroys continues: "So stop asking."

She replies: "I did!"

The first few panels show her beginning to say, "The night --" before involuntarily wincing, then releasing her breath.
She says "The night of my wedding," above a flashback of her younger self lying on a bed in the dark. She stares at the ceiling with a blank but subtly nervous expression, lying on her back like a corpse, her hands clasped tensely on her chest. A man sits on the edge of the bed, smoking in his undergarments. He makes a snipe at her expense for just "lying there."
In the last panel, back in the present, she looks away from the viewer and says "...It is a cruelty of nature, that the soft clay of a woman's body must be molded and deformed by a man's rough hands to sculpt her child. Yet as the years pass, as it is used up, clay grows hard, unyielding, too brittle to invite touch. That is nature's mercy."

In the first panel, Ambroys responds to the question, looking nervous. He holds a rose-gold, sparkly smart phone in his manicured hands. He says: "Why would I -- I haven't had trouble tying my shoes since I was like FIVE YEARS OLD?!" He pauses. "Hang on. I have to call somebody."

The next panel shows Lou answering her phone. She's lounging on a couch. Through the phone, Ambroys shouts: "LOU!"
She replies: "What do you want, dickbag?"
He says: "I'm going to ask you something and you've gotta be honest, okay? Do I ever come off like I'm dumb?"
She says, bluntly: "All the time."

The next panel is mostly a giant speech bubble of Ambroys screaming "FUCK YOU!" over Lou's phone, then hanging up.

After a brief pause, he starts calling her again. She looks begrudging about answering him, but does so.

Instead of a proper greeting, he asks: "Dumb like a silly puppy? 🥺👉👈"
She replies: "Dumb like a dumbass."
Again, he screams "FUCK YOU!" and hangs up.

In the first panel, he slouches as he talks about his experiences being bullied in his school years. He says "Like many predatory beasts, schoolboys travel in packs. Was he the worst of the lot? Hnf. It is difficult to say whether the wolf that tore open your stomach is preferable to the one that gnawed upon your ribs." The plumes of smoke form a sort of window to a flashback, showing his teenaged self being harassed by a group of boys. He's much smaller than the rest of them, easily restrained by the tallest figure, a muscular anthro golden eagle, while a scrawny pine marten takes a swing at him and a fox cackles at his misery. Red blood spurts from the teenaged rat's nose.

In the next panel, the rat's face turns to a sharp-toothed grin. He laces his fingers together, sneering as he says: "Years on from our last, ehk-hem, disagreement, I chanced to encounter him in Ironfrost, conversing with military men; his father's friends, no doubt. He was claiming his disfigurement was an old hunting wound. Perhaps he thought a feral boar made for a grander foe than a cornered rat. He did not look pleased to see me." The rat laughs a sickly, phlegmy laugh. "A pity for him. If he had allowed me to finish my work years ago, he need not have SEEN me at all." Another flashback shows the eagle, now a grown man dressed in white tie attire, looking with alarm at the viewer with alarm and disgust. Deep red scars frame the eagle's eyepatch.

Panel 1: He says: "So, don't think I'm a pansy, but I don't really see the appeal of harems. Just one relationship is tiring enough."

Panel 2: Looking off to the side with a tired expressed, he whines: "You're always having to think about how she's feeling, what she's needing, what kind of man she's wanting you to be..."

Panel 3: The unicorn holds the wine bottle up to his head like it's an ice pack for a headache. He suddenly looks alarmed, more disheveled than the prior panels. He says: "Can you imagine doing ALL THAT for like, TEN women? GODS! You'd have to be ten men at once!"

Panel 4: He scoffs, "now, you might say, Ambroys, having a harem isn't about what the WOMEN want, it's supposed to be about what YOOOU want!" He then murmurs to himself "yeah, as if anyone ever cares about what I want..."

Panel 5: Suddenly enraged, the unicorn puts a hand to his chest and yells: "Well, YOU don't have to put in the effort if you're good with all of them getting sick to fucking death of you and running off with their eunuch guard, but I'M not getting CUCKED by a EUNUCH, okay?!"

Panel 6: As quickly as he was infuriated, he's calm again, putting on a sweet face and snuggling the wine bottle like a teddy bear. He says: "Uh. Heh. Ehehe. Anyway... I think I'm happy having one lover at a time. It's more special that way." His voice is so saccharine his speech bubble has a little heart at the end.

The rat man still hand his hands up in a pawlike posture, so the ermine woman flicks her finger downwards and whispers "hands." The rat man hurriedly shoves his hands down, holding them stiffly at his sides, as he whispers back "thank you, mother."
Then, addressing whatever off-screen individual made the offensive remark, he declares "SO, as you can CLEARLY see, I do not behave like an ANIMAL!"

In response, a sarcastic-looking Ambroys says "I mean, the most likely reason I'd be THAT mad at somebody would be if they were giving me a bad name... so 'taking revenge' on someone like that by destroying my OWN reputation MORE seems, uh, how do I put this..." (a pause.) "Fucking stupid?"

Ambroys, considerably more disheveled and distraught, whines: "b-but it's not my fault! How was I supposed to know it was a bad idea??"

The lioness says, gently: "Sunshine, listen to me. When our people see your silver hair, they don't see age. They see a mark of eminence."
The unicorn responds: "Do you really think so?"
The lioness: "If it makes you stop grousing about it, yes."
