The RedNote shift is just bizarre. There are so many Western-based social media options, what is it about the Chinese form that is capturing that base that can't be innovated in the West? Is it the eventual enshitification that always happens with Western platforms?
Idk how to think about social media though, it feels like mostly a cross between the company brand and establishment of network effects. Maybe the algorithm is really that unique or admin of moderation?
For what it’s worth software security is not a uniquely America problem. It stems from a long history of building software without concern for for said security or even just correctness in any serious way. And! Software systems are complex and deterministic so any flaw can be exploited on demand.
Well, yes, but China isn’t going to allow headlines acknowledging that they have been hacked. How do we know how many times their systems have been penetrated? We don’t and never will.
