Excerpt from “Why Brains Need Friends” by Ben Rein: Simpler terms almost always get the job done better. Why “utilize” or “employ” big words when we can just use smaller ones? Sure, it might feel good to “exhibit” that you “wield” a “capacious” vocabulary, but you can still be a good writer with basic language. Big words tend to “obfuscate” —I mean cloud—the meaning of ideas. Sometimes they help make a point, but they can also box out readers.
