Once a hot-bed of far-left politicking, the National Union of Students is getting real. Under the presidency of Wes Streeting, 26, a Labour Party supporter and veteran student activist, the NUS has reformed its structures, eradicated its debt and even embraced the principle that students should pay tuition fees.
That puts them to the right of the Liberal Democrats who have recently reaffirmed their commitment to free higher education for all

– On 27 November 2024, Reader was elected as the new chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Infrastructure. Prior to being elected, Reader was ‘Work Winning Director‘ at global consultancy and construction firm Mace. So we have someone who was previously in charge of bidding for large government contracts for a multinational private firm now on the inside facilitating more lucrative infrastructure contracts for the private sector.
– Reader also worked at APMP, a paid subscription service that helps private companies win contracts, and was a National Director at construction and infrastructure consultants Pick Everard. – The Infrastructure APPG is sponsored (via benefits in kind) by the Institute of Civil Engineers (aka ICE), who advocate for government “use of public money – and other levers available to government – to attract private investment.” In other words, public-private partnerships. They also advocate for “closer collaboration with the supply chain and less political interference” and say “the government should engage people more about how infrastructure investment meets their needs and the benefits of private sector involvement.” ICE are focused on “transport, water and energy systems”. Their 2025 infrastructure briefing document states “Many PFI deals are now ending, prompting wariness about any potential bad news stories around excessive returns and poorly maintained assets falling back into the public sector. Managing the narrative, being transparent and demonstrating that lessons are being learned will be key to avoiding spooking investors or alarming the public about the role of private investment in infrastructure.”
-Mike Reader has made it clear that it is private global investors, not the public sector in the UK, that should be behind the building of our water, transport and energy infrastructure. He also states that abandoning PFI and PPPs (public private partnerships) is “misguided”.

Foreign Office bosses feared Lord Mandelson would “go public” with damaging claims against the Government if did not swiftly agree to compensation. The claims are contained in an email written by a senior civil servant discussing a call with the peer over his sacking.
In it Mark Power, the Interim Chief People Officer, wrote: “His argument heavily focusses on the reasonableness of the PM’s decision. There is some carefully placed language around the public implications of not reaching a settlement, and the nature of an employment tribunal case.”
Part of the email has then been redacted. Mr Powell ended it by writing: “There is a potential, that absent a positive indication, Peter goes public on some of his claims so there is some urgency.”

– Her grandfather was a government minister in Gibraltar.
– Sackman was privately educated.
– Landlord: Sackman receives a rental income from a flat in London.
Her husband, Dan Squires is a barrister at Matrix Chambers and is on the Panel of counsel of the EHRC (Equality and Human Rights Commission).

What does all the lobbying from these groups achieve?Well, in September 2025 it emerged that private equity carry-over tax was raised from 28% to 34% – rather than the 45% promised in Labour’s manifesto, following pressure from the private equity lobby. Reeves had previously promised to close a tax loophole in which “private equity bosses who strip the assets of British businesses pay a lower rate of tax on their bonuses than workers do on their wages”; the decision to allow this to continue was described as private equity scoring “a huge Labour tax climbdown“.

They are a client of lobbying firm Teneo, where MP Georgia Gould‘s husband, Alex Zatman, is currently a director. Labour MPs that have previously worked as lobbyists for Teneo include Steve Race and Andrew Lewin. Other clients of Teneo include Santander, Serendipity Capital, Lloyd’s, Edinburgh World Investment Trust (owned by Baillie Gifford), and Clayton, Dubilier and Rice (the US private equity firm that bought out Morrisons in a debt-fuelled takeover in 2021). Lord Spencer Livermore, who is currently Financial Secretary to the Treasury, was a Director at Teneo from 2009 to 2015. Matt Pound, currently the Chancellor’s Political Secretary, has held various senior staff roles in the Labour party, including Starmer's Labour leadership campaign in 2020. He once declared himself to be a "full-time organiser against the hard left". Pound spent three years as an organiser for right wing faction Labour First and is described by the FT as Morgan McSweeney's "fixer" who enabled moves to reduce democracy and the voice of members in the Labour party. He is also known for posing in a "Zionist shitlord" t-shirt with Luke Akehurst and Marlon Solomon. The Times reported that Pound was part of an inner circle of Mandelson associates that met regularly for suppers at Lord Roger Liddle's London home; the group comprised of Pound, Wes Streeting, Streeting's fiance Joe Dancey, and advisers Matthew Doyle and Matt Faulding. Pound is married to Hennah Shah who is a 10 Downing Street Special Adviser and was formerly a political adviser to Pat McFadden, a Lambeth councillor; she started her career at KPMG.

Under the presidency of Wes Streeting, 26, a Labour Party supporter and veteran student activist, the NUS has reformed its structures, eradicated its debt and even embraced the principle that students should pay tuition fees.
That puts them to the right of the Liberal Democrats who have recently reaffirmed their commitment to free higher education for all. Streeting knows the NUS's position is controversial and that some of his members won't like it. "But it's my responsibility – and the responsibility of the NUS – to be honest," he says.
