Douthat: I respond to it first by saying there are things that the Trump administration has done regarding universities that I think are completely reasonable and, in fact, have been secretly welcomed by people in universities themselves.

As liberals have gained control over major institutions—universities, major nonprofits, the media, Hollywood—are they no longer insurrectionists but rather ripe targets for insurrectionists? Have their elevated standing and growing affluence turned them into proponents of the status quo?
Vance looks upon the men who won the Second World War as civilizational models. They weren’t just defending ideas — “not ‘liberalism,’ not ‘freedom,’ not even ‘democracy,’” he writes. “It was Western Christian civilization, and the values particular to it: the concept of natural rights, including freedom of speech; a sense of duty to one’s neighbors; an obligation of the strong to protect the weak; a belief in free will and individual conscience.”
Vance acknowledges America’ peculiar institution, though with a generous helping of passive voice. “We learned of the slaves who were brought over and how they helped build the country with their bare hands,” he writes. “How they were mistreated and struggled but came to prevail at the end of the long road to freedom.” Also, Vance posits that regionally divergent interpretations of the Civil War are simply “part of the complicated diversity of the United States.”
Political trade-offs are evident when Vance recounts his history lessons on America’s own civilizational greatness, particularly those surrounding the Civil War. While Confederate generals fought for the “wrong cause” and Union generals for the “right cause,” he notes, the Confederates were “strategically brilliant” and “tragic in their heroism.” And, really, both sides helped build the nation: “Whether our great-great-great-grandfathers fought for Grant’s or Lee’s army, we learned that their actions that day had made it possible for us to be part of a United States of America.”
The conflict was resolved, but at a cost of more than 600,000 lives. Constitutional amendments were pass to abolish slavery, grant equal protection under the law, and guarantee the right to vote regardless of race. Yet the damage done by the denial of core American principles and by the attempted substitution of a theory of group rights in their place proved widespread and long-long-lasting.

Mr. President, the astonishing actions of the Congress already taken on H.R. 7152 are evidence of the existence of an almost mythological illusion about, and a mystical preoccupation with, equality. The sole appearance in any of our historical documents of the word "equality" is in the preamable to the Declaration of Independence. Nowhere is the word in the Constitution.

First, significant illegal immigration into the United States is a new circumstance that was largely unknown as of 1868 and that the Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment could not have fully anticipated.

By contrast, you look at something like the trans ideological movement, that I think is a lie — it’s grounded in a series of falsehoods — and maintained this suppressive, threatening, censorious power in the pre-Elon Twitter days, and in the general woke years. And then look, another uncomfortable fact: Per capita, this group has committed more mass violence than any other group.
And I think you would also agree, perhaps, that the institutions, the legal system, the prevailing narrative at universities, corporations, etc., was explicitly anti-white for a number of years that for these young people were formative. It’s sometimes moved into being anti-white. I would not say it was all explicitly anti-white.
In some cases, we’re talking about something much darker than that. There are people who just don’t like the way their community is changing, and then there’s the K.K.K. Everything exists on a spectrum. But would you say someone who is, for example, hesitant about rapid, large-scale demographic change is just a 1 percent white nationalist? No, I don’t believe that. Yeah, because that would be like the majority of the country. Yes. I don’t think it is a problem, or unfair, or even wrong, to worry about large-scale, rapid demographic change.

Even those who came upon tea that had washed ashore weeks later faced severe consequences. One such unluckily person was Ebenezer Withington, who, in January of 1774, came upon “half a chest” of tea the marshes of his hometown of Dorchester. The Sons of Library caught wind of Withington’s scheme to see the tea. Ultimately, patriots took Withington’s stolen tea and brought it to Boston Common, where they “committed it to flames.” The patriots consumed it in the old sense, rather than consuming it in the emerging sense of the world. For this group, consumption meant use or destruction.
The Tea Party was both the high point and endgame for consumer activists who understood use as the crucial category of action. It marked the last moment in which consumption as use predominated over consumption as purchase in political importance.
The recollections of Hewes, considered the last surviving member of the group of sixty that stormed the pier and dumpy the tea overboard, focus to a surprising extent on his efforts to prevent those charged with dumping the team and the many hundreds of observers from somehow salvaging the aromatic leaves for personal use. Indeed, in his memoir, published in the 1820s to great acclaim, Hewes devotes more words to the pursuit of the tea thieves than he does to the act of dumping the tea overboard.
“One may oppose T.P.S. And favor tighter restrictions on immigration for economic or other reasons that have nothing to do with race,” he wrote. “And a person without racial bias can provide a harshly unfavorable description of living conditions in some of the countries with T.P.S. Designations.”

Clearly, reformers have no shortage of ideas to repair the system, but none will end the ground war. The sole best idea is to engage in a long-term struggle for a constitutional amendment affirming a universal right to vote that is not skewed by the eighteenth-century logic of the Electoral College or the monstrous process of partisan gerrymandering. One person, one vote, equally weighted.
It continues to be a stunning fact, no matter how often it is said, that a Democrat won the popular vote for the White House in every presidential race from 1992 to 2020—with one exception, in 2004, when President Bush won the popular vote against John Kerry during a war launched on fraudulent claims. No wonder the Republican Party is choosing electoral chaos over legal order. The present Trump-induced turmoil, it is worth remembering, began in 2016 when President Trump won the Electoral College, but Hillary Clinton beat him in the popular vote by over 2.86 million.
The halcyon days after the Voting Rights Act saw further expansions: the Twenty-Sixth Amendment lowering the voting age to eighteen in 1971, the addition of minority languages in 1975 and physical disability in 1982, and finally the National Voter Registration Act (aka the “Motor Voter Act”) of 1993, which required states to offer the opportunity for driver’s license applicants to register to vote at the same time. This upward trend may have masked the deeper, more problematic history of voting rights in the United States, lulling the nation into a sense of infinitely expanding democracy. Not all vectors were promising, however, as the Court decided in Richardson v. Ramirez (1974) that states, in this particular case California, could deny the right to vote to convicted felons—even those who had served their time and finished parole. It was the shape of voting rights to come.
