There are 4 categories that individually account for large amounts of PM2.5 1) Road transport - in 1990, this produced less PM2.5 than industrial processes + product use or domestic wood or coal burning. In 2024, while overall emissions in this category have more than halved, it now produces more PM2.5 than industry, + a similar amount to domestic combustion. 2) Domestic combustion: (burning a variety of fuels including wood, solid smokeless fuels, coal and fuels derived from waste such as coffee logs in homes), emissions of PM2.5 shrank to roughly a quarter of their 1990 levels by 2024. Emissions in 2024 are now similar to those from road transport. In 1990, emissions were higher from domestic combustion than industrial processes + product use. By 2024, PM2.5 emissions from domestic combustion were slightly lower than from industrial processes + product use. 3) Industrial combustion: refers to the burning of fuels on manufacturing and construction sites, to generate energy for industrial use, for example to drive mobile machinery or to create heat or electricity for industrial processes. It has fallen dramatically since 1990 + is now the lowest source of PM2.5 in England. The 'Other' category combines miscellaneous other sources of PM2.5 which, while individually not as high as the 4 big categories, collectively produce more PM2.5.
