At the current Earth's Energy Imbalance of +1.4 W/m², the heat needed to melt the Thwaites/Doomsday Glacier (~84 ZJ) and increase global sea levels by 65 cm accumulates in only 4 years! Besides the amount of heat added, what happens with that heat is crucial.

Here is something I wonder about sometimes: Is it truly ice melt that caused rapid sea level rise in the past? (Late Eemian for example) What if the sliding into the ocean/structural collapse of ice sheets is the main thing and the melting comes gradually, over potentially longer time periods?

Currently ~90% of Earth's Energy Imbalance is directed to heat the oceans. That could change. An equal amount of heat directed to melting of land ice vs thermal expansion of sea water results in about 50 times as much global sea level rise! bsky.app/profile/leon...
