On the other hand New Zealand First seems to be reaping rewards from National with its third consecutive increase in this poll, and its strongest result in the Reid Research series in nine years. Despite National rolling out policy that even Labour can't find fault with, such as its compulsory KiwiSaver and baby boost policy or its household solar panel loans, it can't get traction in the polls. Voters are even starting to feel less gloomy about the economic outlook, but National is just stuck in the mud. There's a point where Luxon might need to consider whether he's the problem. History would suggest he's got until eight weeks out from an election to do that and his party could still have electoral success.

But on Tuesday morning, soon after ACT leader David Seymour made clear that ACT would never support such a move, Stanford’s office emailed The Post to say it was “not looking at restricting or banning VPNs”.

Labour is asking New Zealanders to trust them again, but the numbers in their own policy are already falling to pieces. If Labour can’t get their numbers right on what the policy will cost, they certainly can’t be trusted on their claims about how it will be paid for. We’ve all seen this from Labour before, and history tells us it’ll end up being funded by more taxes and more borrowing. Labour claims its fare cap policy will: ➡️ Cost $65 million per year. ➡️ Save the average person more than $1,200 per year. ➡️ Benefit around 1.36 million New Zealanders who use public transport every year. These three claims cannot all be true. If 1.36 million people are each saving more than $1,200 a year, the cost of delivering those savings would exceed $1.6 billion annually - not $65 million. On the other hand, if Labour’s $65 million cost estimate is correct, then spread across 1.36 million public transport users, the average benefit is less than a dollar a week. This is classic Labour. The headline sounds great. The maths falls apart the moment you look at it.

Without journalists free to scrutinise those in power, citizens cannot know what their government is doing in their name, and a government that cannot be watched cannot be held to account. That is why the suggestion a newsroom could be censured or suspended from Parliament, after it reported on a Minister's taxpayer-funded accommodation allowance, should concern every New Zealander, not just the journalists involved. A press that can be barred from Parliament whenever it discomforts those in power is no longer a watchdog. It is a guest, admitted on good behaviour. Reporting on how public money is spent is not overstepping. It is the press doing exactly what a democracy needs it to do. Rules matter. If a filming rule was genuinely breached, deal with it properly: a clarification, a warning, a defined process. But the response must be proportionate. Barring a whole newsroom from the nation's legislature over a single disputed camera shot is not proportionate. It strikes at the public's ability to hold its government to account. Clarify the rules. Take the threat of a ban off the table. A Parliament confident in itself does not shut the door on the watchdog.

Not threatening, not inciting violence, just that it allegedly offended someone. If this report is true, this is '1984 thought-police' level overreach. It should seriously frighten every New Zealander who believes in freedom of speech. This is not about whether this particular post was offensive or not. There will always be personal responsibility and consequences for people voicing their opinions that are viewed by some as tasteless or gormless or offensive - but those consequences should not be by way of a police visit. No one has the right to not be offended, nor do they have the right to be protected from having hurt feelings. In fact it is precisely the right to be able to offend which is the foundation of freedom of speech in our country. This has happened overseas with more regularity where social media posts, opinions, views, expressions, and even jokes are now deemed offensive by some authoritarian power and have been met with threats from police, arrests, or even convictions in court. We never thought we would see this happen here and it has a chilling effect on where we are going as a country. As Oliver Wendall Homles Jr said, freedom of speech also comes with responsibility of speech - you cannot falsely yell 'fire' in a crowded theatre without there rightly being a consequence. We already have laws around 'responsibility of speech' ranging from defamation to incitement of violence, and that is important - but people's freedom to have their own free opinion is something which should be aggressively defended. Coalition preference tracks tightly with the status quo: ACT: 98 percent Nat/ACT/NZF National: 86 percent Nat/ACT/NZF NZ First: 83 percent Nat/ACT/NZF Te Pāti Māori: 95 percent Lab/Gre/TPM Greens: 93 percent Lab/Gre/TPM Labour: 88 percent Lab/Gre/TPM On current seat projections the right bloc holds 65 seats to the left's 55, meaning neither side can govern without NZ First's 17, and 83 percent of NZ First voters want Peters to stay with National and ACT. Taxpayers' Union spokesman, Tory Relf, said: "In an MMP environment the coalition question matters as much as any single party's poll number. Voters aren't just picking a party, they are picking a government, and a plurality want a centre-right one." "NZ First voters have sent an unmistakable signal. Eighty-three percent want Winston Peters back on the right side of the aisle. Only two percent want him to switch. Four in five NZ First voters expect Peters to re-elect this coalition, not swap it out."

Beware of radio jocks seeking relevance who claim “impeccable sources” and rush out scurrilous claims on national media - without even bothering to approach me or anyone else to ask for comment before doing so. Not even an attempt at “balance.” Who cares if you defame someone in the eyes of the nation without giving them a chance to respond first, as long as you get to breathlessly announce your so-called “scoop” that is in fact literally fake news. I’d expect better from an untrained student journalist working on the primary school newsletter on their first day. I am going to be making a complaint to the Media Council about this outrageous breach of journalistic standards. I dare Mr Hosking to name his impeccable source - because I know for a fact that “he” is full of it. In other more important news, I am happy to report that we had a very good discussion yesterday, our caucus is united behind the PM as the confidence vote clearly showed, 100% focused on serving kiwis in this incredibly challenging time, and winning the upcoming election.

Public trust in news in has risen for the first time since records began in 2020. According to the latest Trust in News in Aotearoa New Zealand report, 37% of respondents now trust the news generally, up from just 32% last year. In the context of recent trends, that’s a fairly sizeable jump. The report also shows 50% now trust the news they personally consume, also up five percentage points from 45% in 2025. These are the first positive results about the public’s trust in news since we began researching the subject at the AUT Research Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy in 2020. As we have every year, we asked New Zealanders if they felt they could “trust most of the news most of the time”. We also asked about their trust in the news they personally consume, their views on particular news brands, how much they avoid the news, and to what extent they pay for it.
We looked at publicly available data from the OECD Business Confidence Index for the period from 1987 to 2024 and the ANZ Business Outlook survey from 2006 to 2024. We found business confidence was systematically higher under National-led governments, irrespective of the actual economic conditions. Our modelling showed National-led governments were associated with a 39.9 percent increase in ANZ’s business confidence measure. This was after controlling for economic variables that may explain changes in business outlook – such as economic growth forecasts, employment levels, and foreign exchange fluctuations. Of the nine economic variables we used in our modelling, only the unemployment rate and the US dollar exchange rate were positively associated with increased business confidence. Global economic policy uncertainty was associated with decreased business confidence. But across all our models, it was a National-led government that explained most of the variation in business confidence over time – accounting for 41.5 percent of the variation in confidence in the ANZ Business Outlook survey.
