Travelling in Europe and seeing sights like below (street in Houten, NL that I picked at random) makes me wonder if trying to put pavements in new build estates is pointless. They'll just get covered with cars anyway. Possibly better to create a mixed space for all users and design for low speeds?

Still a reasonable amount of parking (that is not a pavement on the left, you could park there as long as you're not blocking a driveway). Less risk of drivers being surprised by kids emerging from e.g. between parked cars. Slightly higher density of housing overall. Looks nicer. etc!
