There is no need to copy your purchased books from the USB port. You can download them from the Amazon website or the Kindle Reader app on the PC. The only reason to use the USB port is if you can't access a wifi network.

I was waiting for them to feel they could do this. Didn’t quite expect it before March when they’re retiring mobi uploads in kdp.
Give the hackers some time to find a way around it. Someone always does.

I wonder how this affects people who have OG Kindles that were 3G? For example, that Kindle can't take a download at all anymore and ebooks have to be downloaded to PC and then physically copied over to the Kindle via USB.
Many readers buy ebooks from Amazon even though they don't own a Kindle device. Amazon, or maybe the large publishers, would prefer to remove your choice of which device to read on, and what you can do with the ebooks you 'own'. It raises the question again: Do we really own our ebooks?
