This is a retro Hello Kitty phone from the showa era, 1970s. Sanrio. This is now a collectible, rare but very cute. It is aged primary colors which remind you of a childhood art classroom. The phone is red with hello kitty on various little areas of the phone. There are green, red, yellow, and blue buttons. This phone is a rotary with a dial and also a retro toy. A very cute collectible, toy, and apparently has cute sounds that play when you use it.
This post features four images from the mid-90's and early 00's Japanese fashion magazine called Fruits, which was created in 1997 by photographer, Aoki Shoichi (青木 正一). This magazine specifically focuses on the evolving displays of street fashion styles developing by young adults and teenagers in Harajuku. Aoki decided to document the variety of styles that shifted and changed which eventually proved that Japanese fashion wasn't just about style but also community, subculture, and experimentation with cultural heritage. Each image showcases a time capsule of millennium fashion of various different subcultures, trends, and styles. Most examples of the features outfits being quirky, unique, alternative, and experimental with bright colors and bold subversive hairstyles. Each outfit was creative in some way. The legacy of this magazine features Gen-X trendsetters of Harajuku who focused on defying the norms.
The four images in this post are the character Shampoo from the classic manga series, Ranma 1/2 by Takahashi Rumiko who is known for series like Inuyasha, Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku. Shampoo’s clothing, hair, and accessories are reminiscent of traditional Chinese clothing. Shampoo’s hair in the manga is inked black but has a 80’s soft, pastel purple hair color in the anime. She has bangs and two small buns with the rest of her long hair down in the back often paired with small adornments. Takahashi Rumiko’s art is very lightweight, delicate in the details like eyes, hair, and pretty designs of clothing but still feel commanding and predominant like many shounen series of the era. Each image showcases the whimsical, fantasy-like vehicle designs of cars, motorcycles, and electric scooter/moped that range in scale compared to the occupants in these vehicles. Sometimes within average scale while some vehicle designs are whimsically smaller. His designs are delightful and beautiful to look at. Visual development like character design, prop design are essential aspects to creating visual media like manga, anime, animated films. Prop design like vehicles and machines often require intricate attention to detail because of the technical elements. Toriyama’s mechanical designs achieve this with these soft, rounded mechanical/vehicle designs showing attention to small details like wires, license plates, pipes which add a softly worn sci-fi element of the technology with deliberate shading and rendering to highlight the state of the machinery.
