Standing within the Inner Ward on the highest part of the promontory the tower still dominates the castle being fully 75ft in height. The external diameter of 50ft and the bold simplicity of it's limestone construction only further it's striking appearance.

The cutaway diagram shows the original arrangements of it's five storeys. There was at first no doorway into the basement from the outside, only from the spiral stair.

The tower's entrance was on the first floor and was reached by a stairway, probably of timber, with an early sliding drawbridge. Both the stone stair here, and the basement doorway, belong to the later Middle Ages
