"But whatever. The game fundamentally does not matter. The Neopets RPG could be any system, any game, and it would not fucking matter because if it mattered, it would be shown on the Kickstarter page. If the game mattered we would know what it was. If this kickstarter was about selling a game we would know how to play it. But we don’t. Geekify is selling you Neopets, and that’s fucking it. And honestly, that’s fine. If you want to buy nostalgia, there are entire cottage industries set up for that, and IP-based TTRPGs are just starting to cash in. (Remember the Final Fantasy XIV RPG I reviewed last month?) I don’t begrudge anyone who has spare change and wants to throw it at a “game.” What annoys me is that Geekify has so thoroughly identified the combination of IP+TTRPG as the most important part of their sales pitch, rather than anything truly substantial. Daggerheart does not suffer this original sin. It has realized that great rules don’t necessarily encourage great roleplaying — but that great stories encourage great roleplaying. That giving all players tools to facilitate storytelling will, almost certainly, allow for games full of transactional, generative, emotional dialogue — the essential building blocks of any great tabletop RPG. But in many more ways the core methods that Unions work with (or rather against) companies working hard to change with the times is counterproductive to both their membership as well as the companies as a whole.
