Latest Update: 7/14/2026 To our Instructure Community, I'm writing to let you know we're pausing data delivery out of an abundance of caution. I know you've been counting on this, and I want to be direct about why we're making this decision. We recently learned that the third-party platform we've selected to deliver your data may have been subject to a security threat. Security is paramount, and before we upload your data, we want to take the time to assess the platform's safety or find an alternative. Rest assured, your data remains secure, and we will proceed only when we are confident the third-party platform is safe. I understand this is disappointing. But ensuring delivery happens securely is the only acceptable choice. We've worked hard to build this process with your input in mind, and protecting your data comes before any timeline. We're taking the time now to rework our approach with security at the center of every decision. We'll reach out as soon as we have meaningful updates to share about our revised approach and the webinars we had planned. If you've already designated a security contact with us, you're all set—we'll reach out to them as we move through this process. That requirement will remain in place once delivery resumes. This designated contact will be your institution’s source for receiving data reports, privacy notices, and other security communications going forward, including bulletins, webinars, whitepapers, and materials related to the response, management, or prevention of potential security or privacy incidents. Who this should be: The person who receives security-related updates on behalf of your institution, including privacy notices and ongoing security communications. This is typically a Chief Information Security Officer or equivalent, but it doesn't have to be. The contact who is designated to receive notice of privacy or security incidents in your institution’s agreements. If you are part of a system, consortium, district, or other larger entity, please confirm your primary security contact with that larger entity. An individual, not a distribution list or a shared inbox. Please note your institution can designate up to two security contacts at a time, and your LMS administrators can update them as needed. Instructure will use commercially reasonable efforts to make each Service identified in the Order Form as a subscription (a “Subscription Service”) available with an annual uptime percentage of at least 99.9% (“Subscription Service Commitment”). In the event Instructure does not meet the Subscription Service Commitment, Customer will be eligible to receive a service credit as described below. The maximum amount of the credit is 1/12 of the annual subscription Fees paid and attributable to the Subscription Service that is unavailable for a twelve (12) month period. The service credit is calculated by taking the number of hours the applicable Subscription Service was unavailable below the Subscription Service Commitment and multiplying it by 3% of 1/12 of the applicable annual subscription Fees. Any days prior to Customer’s initial use of the Subscription Service will be deemed to have had 100% availability. Any unavailability used to calculate a prior service credit cannot be used for any future claims. The Subscription Service Commitment does not apply to any scheduled outages, standard maintenance windows, force majeure events, and outages that result from any technology issue not originating from Instructure. Customer’s sole and exclusive remedy for breach of the Subscription Service Commitment in this Section 8 will be for Instructure to provide a credit as outlined in this Section 8 and only on the condition that Customer notifies Instructure in writing of such claim within thirty (30) days of becoming eligible for such claim.

Customer’s use of the Service in the ordinary course, including viewing dashboards, reports, and analytics made available within the Service, does not constitute a violation of this provision.
STATUS UPDATE 5/11/26 We know that concerns about the potential publication of data related to this incident remain top of mind for many customers. We understand how unsettling situations like this can be, and protecting our community remains our top priority. With that responsibility in mind, Instructure reached an agreement with the unauthorized actor involved in this incident. As part of that agreement: The data was returned to us. We received digital confirmation of data destruction (shred logs). We have been informed that no Instructure customers will be extorted as a result of this incident, publicly or otherwise. This agreement covers all impacted Instructure customers, and there is no need for individual customers to attempt to engage with the unauthorized actor. While there is never complete certainty when dealing with cyber criminals, we believe it was important to take every step within our control to give customers additional peace of mind, to the extent possible. We continue to work with expert vendors to support our forensic analysis, further harden our environment, and conduct a comprehensive review of the data involved. We will continue to provide updates as that work progresses.

May 6, 2026 Confirmed Security Incident Resolved - UPDATE - Canvas is fully operational, and we are not seeing any ongoing unauthorized activity. As a precaution, we recommend customers follow security best practices, including enforcing MFA on privileged accounts, reviewing admin access, and rotating API tokens or keys where applicable. This will be our final update via this status page for this incident. We will continue to provide updates as appropriate through other channels and are now communicating directly with impacted customers to provide organization-specific information and support. “Google is undermining academic integrity by shoving AI in students’ faces during exams,” says Ian Linkletter, a librarian at the British Columbia Institute of Technology who first flagged the issue to me. “Google is trying to make instructors give up on regulating AI in their classroom, and it might work. Google Chrome has the market share to change student behavior, and it appears this is the goal.”

My name is Ian Linkletter, I'm a librarian from Vancouver, BC. On September 2nd, 2020, I was sued for copyright infringement by Proctorio, Incorporated because I cited and linked to their own YouTube videos in 7 critical tweets. This website compiles my statements and updates related to Proctorio's lawsuit, which has continued now for over five years ("over" is highlighted to emphasize an edit).
A comparison of six individuals used to demonstrate face detection performance by OpenCV, with three dark-skinned individuals not detected ("N") and three lighter-skinned individuals detected ("Y"). Below each image are metrics: Estimated FTDR (Failture to Detect Rate), Skin Lightness (L*), Head Covering (Y/N), and Glasses (Y/N). The three undetected individuals have darker skin tones (L* values ~30–31), all wear glasses and head coverings, and have high FTDRs (~76–79%). The three detected individuals have lighter skin tones (L* values ~60–62), no glasses or head coverings, and very low FTDRs (~0.34–0.42%).
Testing of AI systems is important for ensuring accuracy and re- liability. In this study, we demonstrate how scenario testing with demographically varied subjects, a form of prospective testing that simulates real-world conditions, revealed significant performance issues in biometric systems prior to broad deployment. Using gener- alized linear modeling, we show that subjects’ measured skin light- ness, along with other demographic factors, significantly impacted the probability of failure to detect a face. Failure rates increased from just 0.28% for subjects with the lightest skin in our sample to 24.34% for subjects with the darkest, controlling for other fac- tors. We show that skin lightness, rather than self-reported race, best explained the differences in system performance. We trace these issues to widely used, older methods in open-source packages for face detection. Furthermore, this demographic differential is not observed when testing open-source packages using a different, more curated dataset. Our results highlight the need to evaluate full multi-component, operationally deployed AI systems and the role of scenario testing as a critical component of AI governance. One way to mitigate the likelihood that poor-performing, older open source methods are deployed in an operational system would be to deprecate these functions in favor of higher-performing al- ternatives. Prospective assessments of AI, in real-world use cases with demographically varied subjects, should be used to identify performance issues before these systems are operationalized.

AI detection tools including the one available in Turnitin have been found to be unreliable in university contexts, often producing false positives or negatives or easily being subverted. Unlike traditional plagiarism checkers, AI detection tools rely on statistical methods to estimate the likelihood that a piece of text was generated by AI. This can lead to wrongful accusations of academic misconduct, damaging trust between lecturers and students, and creating an adversarial learning environment. At UCT, the Senate Teaching and Learning committee has decided to discontinue the use of the AI detection score in Turnitin effective 1 October 2025."

How do you know I’m a student? We verify student status using SheerID’s secure verification system, which confirms your eligibility through multiple methods: Authoritative Sources: SheerID first checks trusted databases, such as your university's Office of the Registrar, to instantly verify your student status. "Use in Schools. Facial recognition is also being used to mediate children’s access to education. This is despite the persistent evidence of discrimination within facial recognition systems, including systems being deployed by schools. One student found her schools seemed to be ‘using a facial detection model that fails to recognize Black faces more than 50 percent of the time.’ Some students found that during the Covid-19 pandemic—in order to take vital exams—they had to surround themselves with lights in order to ensure that the facial recognition systems recognized their face was there at all. Many schools around the world have implemented these technologies without the appropriate oversight, transparency, or review."

"The research shows compelling evidence that the experience of racialized students is not favourable in SOL. This is beyond student achievement, where “the gap between Black and Asian student performance was much wider in online courses than it was in face-to-face courses” (Xu & Jaggers, 2013, p. 21). Moreover, through discriminatory design, biases are built into technological infrastructure (Benjamin, 2019); in turn, societal inequities are (re)produced with precision online (Baum & McPherson, 2019; Du Bose & Gorski, 2020). The design of some online tools such as the proctoring software Proctorio, dehumanizes some racialized students. Proctorio is often unable to see students of colour as living beings on a screen (Onderwijs Persbureau, 2022). This speaks to the way that the tools themselves can systemically disadvantage students in addition to the way that the situational use of these tools can, because of different factors, differently impact racialized students.

Students of color have reported having difficulties getting remote camera proctoring software, such as Proctorio and ExamSoft, to “see” them regardless of how well-lit their room is. These software tools, which are used to flag potential cheaters, can use facial recognition to track students’ actions. Black women, in particular, are at greater risk of being falsely accused of cheating by these automated tools.
