They continue to use social media after their injury yet receive little support to use it safely. This research aimed to co-create a social media communication assessment tool to support people in setting and achieving social media goals in rehabilitation. We developed the Social Media and Online Communication Assessment (SOCA) tool, the first of its kind to guide clinicians in supporting use of social media for communication, participation, and inclusion after ABI.

Social media helps them connect but can be challenging to use. People used Instagram and YouTube to: Educate others; Share experiences; Promote services; and Motivate and support. YouTube focused on telling personal recovery stories, while Instagram emphasised community and overcoming challenges. Social media can reduce isolation for people with TBI. Health professionals should support its safe and effective use in rehabilitation.
