The planned encampment closures are not what I voted for Dear Mayor Her and Members of the St. Paul City Council, I am writing to you today out of deep concern, and frankly, disgust. I voted for you with the hope that you would lead with compassion and support for all St. Paul residents. The decision to evict people from the Fish Hatchery Road encampment on August 5th is a profound betrayal of that trust. I hear your official reasoning, that these sites are unsafe for their residents. The reports of fires, overdoses, and assaults are certainly tragic and demand a response. But removing the only shelter these people have, without providing genuine, guaranteed alternatives, is not a solution. It is cruelty. As service providers have noted, there is simply not enough housing or shelter capacity to accommodate the 150-160 individuals who will be displaced. This decision is especially troubling given the ongoing economic instability and housing crisis exacerbated by Operation Metro Surge. The residents of these encampments are not just a problem to be solved. They are our neighbors, many of whom have been made homeless by forces beyond their control. And then there's the money. During Operation Metro Surge, the St. Paul Police Department spent nearly **$5 million** directly tied to federal immigration activity between November 2025 and February 2026 . Between January 7 and February 5 alone, St. Paul officers worked 4,679 overtime hours at a cost of **$372,341**. On the day Alex Pretti was killed, the department logged 1,007.5 overtime hours in a single day, costing over **$99,000**. The city even spent **$7,499** on new identifying markers for St. Paul police vehicles so they could be distinguished from federal agents' vehicles . Meanwhile, residents were calling 911 and getting little to no response. The St. Paul Police Department loaned officers to Minneapolis and spent **$46,000** in overtime in just one day to assist . None of that is your fault, and all of it will be held against you. 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟐: 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬: • Navigating a school system that punishes neurodivergence and calls it "behavioral issues" • Learning to read, do math, and pass tests while possibly hungry, traumatized, or housing-insecure • Applying for college, FAFSA, and scholarships with little-to-no guidance if your parents didn't go • Taking on life-altering debt at 18 because you were told it was the only path • Or: not going to college, and being told you're lazy and will never succeed Either way, you just chose wrong.

Dear Council Members Rainville, Whiting, Palmisano, Vetaw, Warren, and Shaffer, I'm writing about your votes on "Pause Evictions, Save Lives." I've spent the last three months on school patrol, in mutual aid networks, raising funds, and giving my last $120 to keep neighbors housed while they shelter in place, afraid to leave their homes. I've read the arguments against this ordinance. Here's what I'd ask you to reconsider. On COVID comparisons: This expires in August. It's not a years-long moratorium. Eric Hauge from HOME Line, which has seen its highest call volume in 34 years, said: "I don't think it's quite fair to compare it to the pandemic." On rental assistance: Mayor Frey offered $1 million. City data showed a need for $15.7 million just for January. One million is a gesture for clout, not a solution. On affordable housing providers: Thirteen nonprofits opposed this. I hear their budget concerns. But it's hard to watch them prioritize their bottom lines over families hiding from armed contractors. Their buildings will survive a few months of paused rent. The families being evicted may not. Those providers can get another job or find other funding. Our neighbors being targeted by ICE cannot. Maybe we care about homeless families instead of letting nonprofits destroy them for a few bucks. Tenant advocacy organizations like HOME Line, which talks to renters every day, support this ordinance. The disagreement is method, not mission. But when method means evictions, mission has failed. On targeting only ICE-affected families: Council Member Whiting, your amendment requiring tenants to document their fear to their landlord creates an "ICE hit list," as Council Member Chavez said. It also assumes the only people harmed are those directly targeted. They're not. The neighbors raising funds, running school patrol, and showing up every day are affected too.

Worried about the far-right march "against Islamification" targeting our Somali and Muslim community, announced for Saturday? There are several community responses planned, and we want to show folks what they are, so y'all can choose to plug in where you fit in best. First, there is a response being called for from community leader in Cedar Riverside through the Cedar Riverside Protection Alliance. They are going to have community patrollers in yellow vests, religious leaders in orange vests, and will work with the sheriffs and MPD. They are asking Cedar Riverside residents to go about their business as usual, not engage with the march or any anti-Muslim/anti-immigrant agitation, and to call the police if they feel threatened. They are asking non-residents not to protest in the neighborhood. We want to address some misinformation that has been spreading. The Cedar Riverside community leaders have NOT asked everyone to ignore the march or to stay out of downtown and the broader area entirely. Jaylani Hussein from CAIR just posted a video earlier today addressing this misinformation. The community leaders are asking people not to protest IN Cedar-Riverside itself.

Dear DFL Code of Conduct Committee and Party Leadership, I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding the deeply concerning conduct within the DFL Feminist Caucus and the equally concerning official response from its leadership. During the September 9th meeting, multiple attendees reported a deeply uncomfortable and harmful environment where individuals were misgendered and felt silenced. The subsequent email from Caucus leadership, however, is what has done the greatest damage. The leadership's response did not seek to understand or address these reports. Instead, it: Dismissed and Inverted the Harm: It characterized reports of misconduct as "attacks," effectively blaming those who felt harmed for speaking up. This is a classic gaslighting tactic that compounds initial injuries, and as a survivor of domestic violence it feels sickeningly familiar. I find it deplorable. Engaged in Victim-Blaming: It suggested that those who were misgendered were at fault for not using a technical feature, a claim that is both factually questionable (given the meeting's use of GOOGLE FORMS TO VOTE) and a cruel way to avoid addressing the core issue of respect. Weaponized Trauma: Invoking national tragedies
To the DFL Feminist Caucus Leadership Team, I am writing in response to your email. Your statement is a profound exercise in gaslighting and moral cowardice that has only deepened the damage. Your characterization of calls for dignity and correct procedure as "attacks" is a malicious misrepresentation. Most egregiously, your claim that misgendered individuals “chose not to” use a technical feature to identify themselves is a lie. The meeting was plagued by your own technical incompetence, forced to use Google Forms to VOTE because you could not manage Zoom’s built-in systems. To blame attendees for your failure is beyond the pale. Furthermore, your attempt to invoke the murders of children and the death of a right-wing activist to shield your caucus from accountability is a morally bankrupt tactic. It is a cynical manipulation of tragedy designed to silence legitimate criticism and avoid introspection. You speak of a “Big Tent.” Yet your tent seems to have space for Cyndy Martin, who stands accused of leaving a child to die, but no space for trans members asking for basic human respect. Which feminist ethics prioritizes the alleged over the marginalized? You adopted new language on “caring, empathy, and cooperation.” How do you reconcile those words with platforming a figure like Martin and dismissing the trauma of your members? How do you square this with blaming others for your own meeting's chaotic failures? This response is not a defense of your caucus; it is an indictment of it. You have demonstrated a stunning lack of integrity, competence, and basic human empathy. You have not only failed to address the problem—you have embodied it. With all due disrespect, withdraw my membership.
September 10, 2025 Dear Feminist Caucus Members, DFL activists, and other Party leaders, Last night over 175 members attended our annual meeting to elect new leadership. I am proud to announce our new leadership team, elected by an overwhelming majority, which includes two Native American men, two AAPI women, four African American women, two gay men, and our leadership team comes from five of our eight congressional districts. Our membership of nearly two hundred is statewide. However, this achievement has been undermined by a group of people who attended the meeting in order to attack one of our members in very personal and cruel ways. There are also claims that people on the call were willfully using incorrect pronouns, even though all parties were asked and instructed on how to change their pronouns, and those now saying they were called by incorrect pronouns chose not to do this. They also weaponized Robert's Rules of Order to lengthen debate and make the call so uncomfortable and such a marathon session, that the majority of the body would drop off. This did not happen. After meeting for nearly five hours, we still had nearly 100 people remaining on the call voting on constitutional amendments. This voting body consisted of our party leadership from across the state: the chairs of the Veterans Caucus, AAPI Caucus, African American Caucus, other officers from those community caucuses, as well as from the Native Peoples Caucus. We also had members of the CBRC and the Code of Conduct Committees with us, along with the Chairs from Anoka County, CD3 (convening the election), CD5, CD7 (serving as teller), CD8, as well as the State Party Vice Chairs, our State Party Secretary, and multiple DNC representatives in attendance. Truly, this voting body reflected our party in all of its diversity, and represented a very deep bench of our volunteer activists who keep our party functioning across the state. Dear Chair Carlbom, I am writing to you as a Minnesota woman who is deeply disillusioned by what I have learned about last night's DFL Feminist Caucus meeting. To be frank, I am precisely the kind of voter the DFL should be working to attract and retain. I was raised in a conservative Republican household but left that party in my early twenties. As a single mother focused on survival, I stayed out of politics for a long time. In recent years, I have been cautiously looking to the DFL as a political home that aligns with my values. However, stories like this from last night actively keep me from fully engaging and make me doubt whether there is a place for me here. The reports from the meeting indicate an atmosphere that was openly hostile and unsafe for our trans and nonbinary members. Specifically, I am deeply troubled by accounts of: Deliberate Misgendering and TERF Rhetoric: Attendees reported that individuals were deliberately misgendered and that Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist (TERF) ideology was allowed to flourish. This is absolutely unacceptable for any DFL space, but especially one that bears the name "Feminist." True feminism is inclusive of all women, including trans women. Procedural Silencing: A point of order was raised noting that the chair cannot unilaterally cancel candidate speeches and that stating pronouns is not sufficient to declare one's gender. The report that this valid point of order was ignored is deeply concerning and suggests a failure of basic parliamentary procedure to protect marginalized voices Furthermore, I was horrified to learn that Cyndy Martin, who is currently on trial for Criminal Vehicular Homicide and leaving the scene of an accident for her role in the death of a young boy, was not only present but was reportedly in a position of control. It is atrocious that an individual who allegedly left a child to die would be elevated within a group that claims to uphold feminist values of care, community, and justice.
