The promise of research on SSIs is to reduce the public health burden of untreated or undertreated psychopathology (Schleider & Weisz, 2017). SSIs appear effective in youth, either delivered with guidance or unguided. So, more RCTs evaluating efficacy are unlikely to increase their public health reach. Researchers often discuss embedding SSIs within the context of other interventions in a ‘stepped care’ fashion. However, there is very little work along this vein. If the use of ML algorithms turns out not to be an effective way to increase the public health impact of SSIs, it may be time to study how to embed them in the context of the other interventions (e.g., face-to-face psychotherapy, medications) that we know many youth need (LorenzoLuaces, 2023). For example, do SSIs affect willingness to seek treatment? Do they change outcomes over the course of therapy? Could SSIs entice treatment dropouts back to therapy? RCTs could shed light on the optimal point of introducing SSIs. Additionally, there are opportunities to embed SSIs and other low-intensity treatments into routine care practice. Mental health professionals should not be gatekeepers for scalable interventions like SSIs, as this defeats the purpose of having scalable interventions in the first place. However, mental health providers can be cheerleaders for scalable interventions and facilitate their reach, spread, and uptake. For example, the period in which individuals are put on a waiting list for treatment services is an optimal period for interventions like SSIs because individuals have expressed a willingness for treatment but are not receiving it (Peipert, Krendl, & Lorenzo-Luaces, 2022). Dissemination and implementation research could uncover how to maximize the spread and uptake of SSI. The existing research suggests that psychotherapists in routine care settings may be willing to use SSIs and other low-intensity treatments but do this very infrequently (Peipert et al., 2022).
