A screenshot of a Discord message detailing what the Switch 2 does when swapping between the Switch 1 and Switch 2 physical copies for the same game. The text reads as follows:
"Just took advantage of the fact that I'm a shill to test something
I've been wondering for a while now...
Say you have a physical copy of a Switch 1 game, and then you also have a physical copy of a Switch 2 Edition for that Switch 1 game.
What happens if you load up and save in the Switch 2 Edition, then swap the cartridges back to the Switch 1 game? Just tested that with Mario Wonder, and here are the results:
Starting with the Switch 1 cartridge:
The game shows the Switch 1 artwork on the home screen. Loading up enters the Switch 1 edition, obviously.
Swapping to the Switch 2 cartridge:
Home screen icon switches to the Switch 2 artwork for the game, same for the game's title. The black cartridge icon also turns red.
Opening the game opens the Switch 2 edition, and from there I played a cutscene out and saved.
Swapping back to the Switch 1 cartridge:
Home screen thumbnail and title remain the same as the Switch 2 edition, but the cartridge icon is now black again. Trying to open the game produces a pop-up message saying that in order to access the Switch 2 Edition content, the associated game card will have to be used, but I have the option to start the software anyway. Starting the software causes the thumbnail on the home screen to change back to the Switch 1 artwork before opening the game. Switch 1 edition opens and the save file is intact. Going back to the home screen and closing the game from that point causes the Switch 1 thumbnail to change back to the Switch 2 thumbnail, even though the Switch 1 card is still in the system
