Another room in my mansion on Hello Kitty Island, this time my cute as shit citrus themed kitchen. The floor is green tile with two large citrus wheels and the wallpaper has green stripes with a citrus swag trip up at the top. My character, still dressed like a lesbian camp counselor, stands at the front left next to a little lemon tree. At far left, there's a green table with two mini appliances sitting on it. At back left, there is a little table shaped like a lemon wedge; it has two more mini appliances. At back right, there is a bed with a teal gingham bedspread and a lemon on the headboard. At far right, there's a seating area with a lemon wedge shaped chair, a side table shaped like a lime half, and a couch with the same motif and color scheme as the bed. On the lime half table is a tray with a lemonade pitcher and glasses. This room is cute as hell.

I answered this way on an assumption, so, fair complaint -- and now that you say spectrum, that seems more like it too. But my assumption, formal diagnosis or no, is that Jack is not competent to cook or meal plan, either. Note the MIL and the brother are handling that.

If Jack is "just picky," then there is no way I would have answered the way I answered. But would the daughter have pulled out "ableist"? This is tautology maybe -- I saw "ableist" and assumed there was a diagnosis. The daughter could also have, on her own, decided that his pickiness diagnosed for itself.

Anyway -- my point is, this is an extreme manifestation of anxiety, so it is a health condition. A disability. Two general things can be true at once in that case: that you never want to exclude someone because their disability makes hosting them too difficult, and that some circumstances of the accommodation can make hosting too difficult.

I'm thinking "too difficult" as in housing with too many stairs, though -- not, "We prefer lamb to ham." And either way, you always try to go to Plan B, like hosting at a neutral site, or, breaking tradition for one year, because really, is it the food you're celebrating on Easter?

My daughter’s 25 year-old brother-in-law (Jack) has extreme issues around food. The first time I had my son-in-law’s family over for dinner, I served devil’s food cake which I'd been told was their favorite dessert. When I brought it out, Jack had a melt-down because it had chocolate frosting. His family uses a white fluffy frosting and to him anything else is not devil’s food cake. Lesson learned. I now know every single menu item has to be approved by my daughter’s mother-in-law to be sure it meets Jack’s expectations. Because of this I only invite them to dinner once or twice a year. They never have us over.
